Help
I've got a iron rebar buried in my backyard, with about a foot of it coming out the ground. Well what I have dug around it to try and get it out. Stamped along it's length is this 8x858 Blackburn. What that does that mean and why is it so hard to get out of the ground

1. I don't know what 8x858 is,but rebar sticking out sounds dangerous.
Cut it off,if you can't dig it up.

2. I have a backyard full of rebar.
My experience...you've got to dig out the entire length...it designed to set into whatever surrounds it so you aren't going to yank it out of the ground. You've got to excavate the entire thing or at least most of it. (My grandfather worked construction as a foreman and was a big fan of burying leftover crap in the backyard. We've found wood, decomposed dynamite and trash as well.)

As for Blackburn 8 x 858 that's a manufacturer and a product code telling the grade of steel and processing...not useful information in this case as it doesn't tell us a length. Might be useful if you intend to cut it...but I'm not sure what it means and the only person I know who would know is out of town until Saturday.

3. That's what I'll do
Now, can you suggest what kind of saw I could use?

Just an FYI:

It's next to my detached garage, about 12 inches from the side. It was originally just under the surface and when I started to put a bed there I found it. The home was built in the 40's. What was strange with this rebar is that it's smooth with a large bit about a foot down.

Here's a picture.

4. Hmm...

that doesn't look like any piece of rebar I've ever seen. I'm wondering if the reason it's larger on one end is because there is some sort of ground-anchor attached to that end. That looks like some sort of steel post like one would use for a clothes line or some other sort of standing structure. A fence maybe. It appears to be more than 1" in diameter.

I've cut smaller stuff in my yard with a hacksaw but that could easily take several hours on something like that.

I'm going to suggest you take that picture to your local Home Depot or Lowe's or hardware store...they would know exactly what you'd need. I'm stumped. (Home Depot has tool rental in many stores. Edit: Apparently so does Lowe's.)

Edit 2: This article might be useful re: tool rental. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/16/earlyshow/contributors/dannylipford/main2015486.shtml

5. Looks more like a copper ground rod for grounding electric or cable tv
The ones we used for cable tv were 8 feet long, and we had to pound them into the ground. Try that in the nice coral rock bedding in south florida once. It's not fun!

If you can get ahold of a reciprocating saw (sawzall) it will make it much easier to cut out.
