Do you remember the thread where you met your first DU "friend"?
Not someone you knew before you signed up here, but the first stranger you connected with?

Mine was lizziegrace. Someone had posted about what ten songs your iPod would play next on random, and my list included Ellis Paul.

lizzie responded with a post about how big a fan of his she was, and we started our friendship from there.

Music brought me some other DU friends, but she was my first -- and still my favorite.

5. ok, I guess I was kind of kidding
I'm glad that there are some very nice and smart people here :) However, I don't seem to become nearly as involved in any coputer-based relationships as some do. Back in the 90's I'd talk on the phone with chat room and message board friends, and even met some in person, but I seriously haven't done that it almost 10 years, and have fallen out of touch with those people.

20. I'm staying home.
I'll be insanely nervous, even though I'm outwardly confident.

A friend asked me to Pub Quiz across town, something we've been doing together for a couple months. But I said I'd never be able to concentrate.

Have a great time at the party! I've got a friend who'll be in Grant Park at the huge Chicago bash. I'm hoping for a phone call from him.

Sweet dreams...

29. I have dozens of acquaintances--
not really friends. I know there are names I've come to recognize and respect, people I kind of consider my distant online family, but not people I made a personal connection with. I know that when someone hasn't posted in a while, I miss them.

But I guess I don't make friends easily, even though I like so many of you here. But it's kind of like my personal life--I don't make fast friends, I just have lots of acquaintances. I find it hard to find people who I can talk to. It's easier for me to just post and run.

I guess I'm a little socially inept that way.

32. If you recognize when someone is sort of missing
then maybe that's the kind of friendship that matters.

I'm not quick to befriend anyone either, online or in real life, but it seems to make a difference in both environments when someone reaches out, exposes a vulnerability, or just repeatedly reminds you that they're supportive and available.

30. Not really, but...
...I do remember very early on I went off on (a regular poster to the lounge), not realizing he was joking, which was obvious in immediate retrospect. I remember (said poster) seemed to take it in stride and didn't hold it against me.

I won't go as far as to say I made a friend that day. What surprised me, based on my experiences on other message boards, was that I didn't make any enemies.

33. No, but I remember the first post I made in one of the GD's to ask a question.
The first response was from a hostile nutcase. This was early in the Primaries, and I have no idea who he was for or against. I had not settled on any particular candidate yet, and was trying to learn something.

Others came to my defense, but I decided to let it drop like a stone. So I decided to just sit back and read and learn after that, without asking questions.

It's kinda hard to sort out the hysteria, or baffle and bullshit in there. But there are a few roses in the ashes.

I hadn't really ventured into the Lounge until 2006, but it's nice to see a lot of familiar names even back in 2005.

It's obvious now why so many people admire you. You really help make this like a family.

And it was either hlth2b or Horse With No Name or Trotsky whom I befriended. Sadly none of them post in the lounge much and I don't post in GD much anymore So I don't see them much.
I think Orrex might have been one of my first real lounge friends but I knew him from other forums.
