My female dog is in heat and I have taupe carpet
x(

She's 10 months old in a week, big dog ... a purebred beauceron. Her name is Shania and she's being trained to be my next hearing/signal dog. I was advised to wait until 12 months before getting her spayed for several reasons...better health, balance, calm, etc. I have no experience with a dog in heat. It is supposed to last 3 weeks. :( Do I put a diaper on her?

1. Put a dog maxi pad on her -- you can get her at the pet shop
The whole not spaying until 12 months thing is total bullshit, though. We'll probably get our bitch spayed at 6 months. The only reason we didn't neuter Mick until 12 months was because of his stud potential with his working lines/ability. However, once he started peeing in the house if men came over, it was ball snipping time.

2. Ok, I will
Thanks :hi: I did plan on taking her to have her spayed this month, but too late! Now I have to wait until she's over it. Her breeder advised 12 months... to reduce Shania's chance to have urinary incontinence when she's adult based on her (breeder) personal research.

3. ...
Since you are waiting till after this heat to get her spayed i'd get a few diapers just to make your life a little easier, trust me on that, i learned the hard way.

4. I've never heard of that (regarding the incontinence)
We had one dog that had urinary incontinence when she got old, but she had bladder cancer, which is totally unrelated to spaying.

Spaying does reduce their chances of breast/ovarian/cervical cancer.
