3. I like both phases (or three if you separate the Collins era into two)
With Duke/Abacab marking the diving line in the Collins era.

Granted, half of Invisible Touch could easily have been on one of Phil's solo products from that time but it still had some good moments.

And you have to give the band some points for convincing a beer company that Tonight x3 was perfect for a commerical when the song is predominantly about scoring dope.

5. I love that they released soundboard recordings from every show in this last tour
Best thing a band has done EVER!!!! (though I don't think they were the first to do it).

I missed the tour, and have been kicking myself since. But at least I got to listen to the shows I would have seen. Fantastic. Even in the rain.

7. I skipped the tour thinking once Gabriel and Hackett bailed that the set would be all late period
Since I saw them during the Invisible Touch tour I didn't think this tour's set would be all that different from what I saw back at that time.

I could have kicked myself after someone posted the set list and I saw that a good third or more of the set was from Duke and earlier.

What with the Gabriel-era stuff being reissued as a box set with video footage this week there have been some rumblings that the "classic" line up could possibly get together for a few one-off shows.

From what I've heard it's pretty much Gabriel's call at this point as the others including Hackett are game if he is.

8. I'm a little disappointed with the latest box set
Particularly the video, as I was kinda of the last two boxes. For an age old bootlegger like me, there's a bunch of stuff that could have/should have been included in a box like this that wasn't. Tony, who I think did most of the work, is a fanatic for not including anything that doesn't sound perfect, so there's tons and tons of stuff we don't get to hear EVER, which bites. He claims there's no usable live version of Going out to Get You (for example), but there's at least a couple recordings out there that *I* know of that are reasonable. I'm sure he's got something stowed away that he could clean up into something presentable.

All the same, it's nice to have official and usually fairly good quality videos from the days that we've had to hunt around for and comprimise on quality on for some time. I wish they had included all known Lamb footage. There was an Amazon rumor also that the set would include stills of all the Lamb slides. Sadly I'm 99% sure that's not true, and that's something that could easily have been done. Feh!

And why didn't the real movies appear on the other sets. Three Sides Live and the Mama Tour videos? How the heck are we going to get those on DVD. (Granted the TSL movie kinda sucked), but it's nice, OTOH, that we finally have a DVD version of the 1976 In Concert movie.

Sorry, I'm going off (as I tend to).

Apparently, the band got together before the "Turn it on Again" tour to discuss doing a Lamb tour with the old lineup. Pete wasn't 100% on board yet and wanted to think about it more, so Tony, Mike and Phil decided they would do a tour on their own. Hopefully the Lamb will still happen. I also hope that the Tony, Mike and Phil do another album. It seems stupid that they wouldn't. They all like each other, they don't know what the hell else to do with themselves.

Back to the box, The 5.1 Trespass mix is fantastic, really clear and atmostphereic. That's about as far as I've gotten so far, except a little car listening to the Stereo Nursery Cryme, which sounds very nice, but maybe a little too clean for these dirty classics. Hopefully the 5.1 will have a little more grit.

Oh, and, after waiting 10 years, it's sooooooooooo cool to finally hear the Jackson tape. Thank God Tony didn't poo poo including that one.

Anyway, just rambling.

10. Thanks for the input
Not much of a bootlegger myself and being way too young to have seen anything from the Gabriel-era at the time I'm more than happy to see whatever they provided as far as live stuff from those years.

I did read that there was talk of releasing at least one more box set (comprising all the live releases). My main hope for that would be that the "Genesis Live" album include the rest of the performances from those shows.

I would think the live box set (if it happens) would be the avenue for rereleasing the Three Sides Live and Mama tour videos as the bonus material.

12. That would be awesome, I hope they do it
There's a ton of live material to work through, even just the live releases are no fewer than 4, which is enough to put out another box.

I think the rest of the Rainbow show set from Genesis Live is on the first original Archive boxed set. I may be wrong that it's all there, but Supper's Ready is definitely there.

There original Archive set series was such a truancated bummer for me. I think they had originally planned 4 sets, and ended up with 1.5. The first one was good, and had they continued in that vein, it woulda been great:

3 more sets: 1976-1977; 1978-1983; 1984-1996 (okay, maybe they coulda done it on 2 more sets)

4 discs

1: Unreleased demos/Singles/rare Tracks
2: Assorted live tracks
3-4: Full live show from the era

Instead on the 2nd box we got 20 years of B-sides and a few other things shoved onto 3 discs. The only thing of real note was the cool "Mama: Work in Progress". I would have liked to hear a lot more of that kinda thing.

Anyway, I'm still yammering.

6. You are putting Genesis and Rush into the same sentence??
Sort of like saying that my dirty old socks and Mozart's symphonies are on the same level.

18. It's awesome and there's a lot more (and better quality) out there too
I finally got the whole 30 minute or so super-8 footage that is used in that Back in NYC clip, and it's great.

The new Box set, I just found out 90 minutes ago, has the slides and some footage from the Lamb played while the 5.1 mix is on. It's sooooooooo awesome. I have to get the wife and kids out of the house some night so I can put it on the big screen and blast the hell out of it.

15. After Steve Hackett left, it was all downhill
The Gabriel era and the first couple of Phil albums ("Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering') were fantastic, inspired music-making. After that, not so much.

16. Sorry, I disagree. I love Rush but hate Genesis.
They're talented musicians and all, but that style of music is just way too bland for me. I dig the older Rush (2112 era) much much more.

Genesis makes the punk in me just want to stab myself (or others, depending on my mood) in the neck with a fork.
