Anyone have one they'd like to have used and taken care of... ?

I used to play clarinet when I was a student; at times we would usually try each other's instruments (brass instruments are quite easy to get a sound out of, for instance), but I never EVER managed to even make a sound from a double-reed instrument. Not even a squeak.

went to college on a music scholarship. I couldn't afford my own instrument. They were too expensive for me or my family to buy. I played bassoon for 10 years and flute for 14 years. I miss it.

I stopped because when I left university I left the bands I played in. Music for me was always a social activity.

I'm sorry you can't afford your own bassoon, but fully understand it - decent instruments are so expensive. :hug:

My sister dated a guy who's family made dulcimers. Looking back, she should have married him instead of the Neanderthal she did marry and finally divorced.

I don't play anything because my fine motor coordination stinks, but I sing fairly well.

I'll play keyboards. :)

I mostly just know the words to latin hymns and old punk rock songs.

Why the hymns? I did choir in school, and though it was public we had no budget to speak of to buy sheet music, so our choir director bought a lot of things via her church's budget that she could dual-purpose.

years ago--I think it cost about $30. You can still buy them for under $50 on eBay. Not terribly hard to build.

Since I made mine for the ex (he had a thing for Joni Mitchell and I was silly enough to think he'd appreciate the effort) and really do nothing more than dust it, I'd probably be glad to trade it for bagpipes (I always wanted to learn but he hated 'em, so some karmic equalization there). That would probably make me more popular with my neighbors than a bassoon would! ;)

I'm kind of torn about that... would be cool to have an instrument I made, but am unsure about the quality I'd end up with... Don't have any bagpipes to trade, sorry! :)

I suspect they're more collectible, given this is a folk art. My kit was kind of a no-brainer, except for the scrolly part where the tuning pegs are (they had you glue a block of wood to the end and carve your own). The pieces are pretty much pre-cut, though, so there's not a lot you can screw up. You do need some basic tools like clamps and a coping saw (bet you could make do with a Dremel nowadays), which no self-sufficient woman should be without anyway.

Dulcimers have been made from everything from tin cans to cigar boxes to expensive veneers, so I don't think it has to look store-bought to sound sweet. Maybe you could start with a thumb piano kit and work your way up. :)

If I were to buy one it would be from a guy from Maine, who makes instruments by hand, and made the one I was borrowing from my teacher. :)
