Favorite Oscar moments (from this year's show)?
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 01:56 AM by Shakespeare
It had to be done. :P

Mine:

All of the digs at Bush (especially the "down the rabbit hole" speech!).

The standing ovation for Sean Penn, and the sweet, surprised look on his face at his peers' response.

Jack Black & Will Ferrell singing the "lyrics" to the shut-up-and-get-off-the-stage music.

Sandra Bullock and John Travolta openly hating each other.

Blake "don't touch my oscar" Edwards' short and elegant thank-you comments.

Adrian Brody's breath spray schtick.

The hips on the woman who sang the Triplets of Belleville song (I'm a straight woman, but damn she looked great).

I have other favorite moments, but this'll kick things off....

Errol Morris' "Down the Rabbithole" statement
"Rendezvouz en Bellville" performance (and you're right about the woman).

Ben Stiller in that awful sweater standing next to all the tuxes and dresses.

2. I can only find one picture of her, and it's not a good one.
That was a FABULOUS dress, and her hips....

4. You have a very positive attitude...
I'm glad you reminded me that there were a few, brief interesting moments. Otherwise I would have remembered it only as the most boring Oscar show I've ever seen.

Almost all the women were wearing BEIGE, for god's sake! The Oscars have become entirely too tasteful.

Remember Barbara Streisand's see-thru shirt? The outrageous Bob Mackie stuff that Cher used to wear? Sacheen Littlefeather (aka Maria Gonzales or something)?

Remember the wonderfully appalling dance numbers? I don't think they've done those since 9/11 (although it could have been the year that the dancers were doing the "Holocaust" boogaloo that finally put an end to it.)

5. Oh, yes. The "interpretive dance" numbers
Strange stuff.

7. I always enjoy the show. :-)
Oh, I know it's got its awful moments, and some years are absolutely dismal, but it is what it is. It's spectacle, it's Hollywood being self-congratulatory, it's mostly predictable; but almost always, there will be one or two small moments that are especially funny or especially moving. And that's what I wait for every year. Last year we were treated to Moore's delightful tirade. A few years ago I watched with delight as they saluted Chuck Jones. I LOVED it when they couldn't get the overly excited Cuba Gooding, Jr. off the stage. It's a kick.

Besides, I'm a sucker. The in memoriam thing always gets me, and I usually get simultaneously thrilled and sentimental watching the old movie montages.

I'll add one more favorite moment from tonight: Billy Crystal sitting in Clint Eastwood's lap while singing to him was GREAT.

9. He made a snide comment about her missing rehearsal...
...and it went from there. Zingers back and forth, and I don't think it was scripted. The local news (I'm in LA) just had Bullock at some after-party, and asked her about it. She stopped smiling and said "I'm not at liberty to comment on that." Go, Sandy! (not a fan of Travolta, or any of the other scientologist tools).

8. Sandra Bullock and Travolta hate each other?
I didn't see the Oscars, but is this for real? Curious, I guess.

10. Adrian Brody's bits about the "restraining order," and the breath spray...
Were wonderfully played, and timed perfectly. This kind of schtick manages to puncture the pseudo-solemnity of the awards.

Big points, too, to Will Ferrell and Jack Black, for their song on overly long acceptance speeches.

13. favorite,Sean Penn winning finally! Worst, Charlize Theron winning ..WTF?
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 06:11 AM by Cheswick
Come on she gets ugly and gets an award. Aren't we over that yet?

But I was very happy for Sean Penn. He is a great actor and deserves to finally win the award.

16. Johnny Depp cleaned up his act....
He's been appearing at award shows in mustache, glasses & fedora, looking like an R Crumb character. For the Oscars, he shaved, ditched the hat & looked his usual hot self.

He was genuinely pleased when Sean Penn won. This was Johnny's first nomination & he'll have other chances. He just seemed amused to be there.

17. Depp looked like he's lost weight
His face was SO thin.

He's still a doll baby no matter what, but I prefer the scruffly Euro-Depp to the 21 Jump Street Depp.

20. I love the fact that Depp looks the way he does...
usually. He wears his favorite clothes, and doesn't give a rat's ass what other's think. Just like I love the fact that Keanu Reeves doesn't own a home and can be found sleeping in the streets.

And as a straight guy, I can only say that Depp looks hot no matter what.

19. Loved Julia Roberts' quote of Kate Hepburn re Baba Walters!!
As part of the homage to Kate Hepburn, Roberts told the story that when Walters interviewed Hepburn, Baba chided Kate for always wearing slacks and said "Do you even OWN a skirt?" Kate replied, yes Barbara, I have ONE and I'll wear it to your funeral!"
