New puppy! How to teach him his name?
I recently got a Jack Russell for an early christmas present. I've had one before and I know how they are- stubborn, energetic and brilliant!

He learned to sit in 15 minutes and lay in 15 minutes. He's learning to "come" and what "no" means. He's learned to be quiet in his crate and I'm trying to teach him that it is his "house" and to go in it when told. All of this is OK and he is learning quickly. HOWEVER!

I'm not sure if the little shit does not know his name yet or if he just ignores me sometimes. I know he knows what certain commands are, so he will follow if I say his name with it. If I just try to get his attention, it doesn't work out so well.

Any ideas of how to teach him is name? Mostly, when I say his name for me to stop and look at me?

I really don't know how to begin this, but any ideas would be great!

1. Well, for me I use their name every time I give any command
"Jake, come." "Jake, sit." "Jake, no." They've always seemed to make the connection pretty quickly.

3. That's what I'm try to do.
I hope he picks it up soon.

I'm glad that it seems to work well. I'll definitely keep it up then!

2. Play the "name game"
Keep little snacks in your pocket, and randomly throughout the day call his name. Even if he just looks at you, give him a snack.

At least that's what they taught us in puppy class.

5. I second this. That's what we learned in dog manners class too.
We used clicker training so you say his name, he looks in your direction, and when he does you click your clicker thing and give him a little treat. The sound of the clicker is supposed to work its mojo on their muscle memory and you eventually phase that and treats out. You build up too, so when he's got looking in your direction down, you increase the challenge and don't click/treat until you get eye-contact with the name, and so on.

It was pretty neat--I taught my dog how to shake and how to play dead when I say "BANG" and point at him using the clicker techniques.

6. I taught Pip to "speak" in about 3 minutes
I kept telling her "speak" and she got so frustrated not knowing what I wanted her to do that she started barking at me. :D

7. Haha. They're so great. I want to get Stewart to wave hello, but
it's so close to shake that I don't think it will happen. Which is fine because shaking paws is hilarious. When I get bored I make up elaborate business deals to discuss with him and then we shake on it. Then I do the BANG trick just for fun. :D

8. Just talk to him all the time

just like you would to a person, and say his name frequently when you do.
