I mean, fuck, what do they want - hundred percent success or something? I better they never did that well in, like, school and shit, so why they harpin' on me and shit?

How are you? :hi:

I have never smoked at a gas station either.

I actually had a guy once flick a cig on the ground within 10 feet of me pumping gas. Too close for my comfort. I told him he best step on that in a hurry...he responds "Oh yeah....right"...then he steps on it.

I also can't stand when people use their cell phone while pumping gas...I know the risk is low here, but there is a sign that says to turn the phones off, so I will remind people of that fact.

so he walked about fifty feet away and finished his cig while standing next to a gigantic propane tank.

Yeah, the risk is probably small but I'm a safety guy. I didn't bother to say anything further as I figured the blast would have probably just knocked me down.

19. About the same time we decided that we don't like exploding.
Assuming you are not being ironic, He was right. You are wrong. Gasoline is not flammable, but its vapors are explosive. So the mere fact that you were not in contact with liquid gasoline is immaterial. You could have caused an explosion of gasoline vapor and took the other guy with you. There is a reason it says "no smoking" on those pumps.

Who could possibly think that gasoline vapors will explode if exposed to a smoldering fire? After all, when gasoline fumes are introduced into an engine cylinder and a spark is applied, nothing happens.

When you say it has never happened to you, don't you mean it has never happened to you YET? Anyway, Federal law requires not smoking at the gas pump. Is it REALLY too much to ask of you to go without smoking for the five minutes it takes to fill up? How important is that cigarrette anyway?

Granted that's propane and not gasoline. But if gasoline vapors can act like that, I don't want to take any chances. It was really scary watching that fireball roll out from under my frying pan and right at me. :scared:

That is one of the reasons they are thinking of switching all cars in the US to natural gas by the end of 2009. It ignites much easier than gasoline.

42. There is a difference though, between a cigarette trying to light a
puddle of gas and a lighter setting off gas vapors. So technically, you are right but there is still some risk there if one were to light up at the pump, as documented by the occasional news story about people accidentally setting their cars on fire.

Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 01:34 PM by GreenPartyVoter
it's more likely if you light up with a lighter as you pump, as the gas fumes in the air could very well could ignite because the temp of the lighter is hot enough to set off them off.

55. You stick a chain into the gas tank, drop in a lit cigarette, ...
and see how many people you can get to go fishing for it.

See?

as in not legal or contrary to law. Can cause an explosion and/or fire that would be dangerous to other people. Looks like you ran into somebody with a brain.

smoking while filling his car. Anyway the tank filled up and some gas splashed out and caught his shirt sleeve on fire, luckily another quick thinking customer put the flames out with the windshield squeegee water. Everything turned out Ok for the victim he wasn't burn seriously but the Police did charge him for carrying an illegal firearm.:hide:

118. That's odd
In school they always claimed that if you threw water at a gas fire, all it did was spread the fire. And squeegee waster? That stuff is so nasty I wouldn't be surprised if it blowed up itself.
