So last night we really thought we might have to flee a fire
I fear California wildfires far more than earthquakes. And this year has been very dry.

Last night around 11, our neighbor banged on our door and told us there was a fire burning right across the road from our place. Our house overlooks the little two-lane road and we could see the smoke and flames out our bathroom window.

There is nothing but trees and brush in the area so any fire is a major danger. The wind was blowing - naturally in our direction - so we methodically loaded the cars with those items that are either necessary or irreplaceable, loaded the cat in his carrier and kept an eye out.

As it turns out, it was a house fire (poor bastards - I hope they didn't lose the whole thing but it looked pretty significant) and the firefighters got out quick and contained it rapidly. There is no further activity going on below my house but a fire truck went up the road with the siren wailing about half an hour ago so I don't know if there's anything further going on. If there is, it's not as close.

That was far too close for comfort. Hat's off to the fire department and a big sigh of relief.

1. Yikes...
I don't think I could stand living in an area prone to wildfires.

2. I know three different people who have lost their homes this year
It's far more scary to me than an earthquake - an earthquake has to be pretty significant to cause the damage a fire can and you can usually salvage something. Fire is unforgiving. :scared:
