Yay! I finally have showerage AND heatage!
Couple of weeks ago, the doo-hickey thing-a-ma-bob on the tub faucet that you pull up to get the water to come out of the shower head stopped working. Wouldn't stay up. After several tries, and a lot of twisting and sweat to get the old one off, got the new one on yesterday. I was having to take baths instead of showers, which I didn't like (but which were necessary, of course.)

Today, after not having our forced air gas heat since last March, it's back on. This past year has sucked pay- and work-wise, but finally I have a good, steady job (and paycheck). Because of the afore-mentioned rocky financial year, we couldn't keep up with the monthly bill for the heat, and it was shut off. We've been huddling around two space heaters instead. I paid it off last week, but was having trouble getting the furnace to come back on, so I had them come out today to get it going. I came home to a WARM house!

Wheeeeee! It's like getting a couple of early Christmas presents.

6. Heat is very good, especially because it's supposed to go below
freezing here this weekend.

2. Excellent!
Sometimes I imagine we're forced to do without those sorts of things so that we can feel grateful for what we have. Then I think, why can't it work out so that I feel grateful for winning the lottery? :P

I'm happy for you!

8. Indeed! I'd love to feel grateful for winning the lottery!
But for now, I'll be most grateful for having the heat back on, AND for being able to take showers again. :)

3. Did you fix the shower thingy yourself?
If you did, I'm duly impressed. :D

And I'm SO happy you have heat! I hate to hear of anyone without heat.

11. I know!
Past few days have been pretty cold as it is, but I know it's supposed to be in the very low 30's or high 20's this weekend!

You know the house is cold when you pull clothes out of the closet in the morning, and it's like you've pulled them out of the refrigerator! :scared:

13. Congratulations!
I went without gas service for a few months just about a year ago, including a very short stint of bitterly cold weather. It was 14 degrees outside, and came down to about 43 degrees inside one night. It would have been worse, but the townhouse that I was renting was incredibly well insulated. You can bet your ass that as soon as I could, I got the past due amount paid and toasted the house.

15. What I find rather amusing is that I now like sleeping in a cold bedroom
bundled up in a down comforter! I actually close the bedroom door and crack a window even on frigid nights. I guess I'm a sick pup.

16. Actually, I do sort of the same thing.
When I sleep, I like the air to be on the cool side, and the bed to be warm on cold nights. When my mom was still alive, and I'd go visit her, I'd be really stuffed up in the morning, because she kept her house pretty warm (she hardly weighed anything, and thus was usually cold). I wasn't going to complain, though, but yeah, the room was a tab bit warm for me when I slept.

I don't crack the sliding glass door when it's really cold outside; it's cool enough in there to be comfortable to sleep.

17. I'm actually at my mom's house tonight.
Of course, it's a freakishly warm day here in NJ, so I even put the lighter blanket on the bed to sleep with. Fortunately, we're getting more seasonal after today, so it will be back to the "woozy" blankets and cool rooms.

21. Kind of sounds like my landlord and his sons.
They are great people, very nice, and have been patient through our financial trials (which I appreciate so much).

But their idea of remodeling and upgrading consists of spit and bailing wire!

I've learned to take care of a lot of things myself, and just deduct the cost of any parts I need to buy from the rent.

24. this house is really something...
if I had a camera, I would take pictures and show it off. I have named it "Drek House", but I'm afraid of putting a sign out front that says that, not because my landlord would mind, but because he'd ask me about it (the English don't know what drek means), and then we would have to have an awkward conversation. I would like "Drek House" to be contained in my address somewhere. However, it's also cheap as hell, and the landlord didn't ask for a security deposit, credit check, etc. ... solid gold.

25. I confess, I had to look the definition up.
From what you are saying, I think drek is a good description.

My house was pretty much in 75% drek when I moved in, but over the years, I've been able (on my own, or with the landlord) to turn it into a semi-drek house.

:)
