Like disco with the 70s, and hair metal with the 80s?

9. I'd give a pass to some of the Apatow movies on that list.
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 12:41 PM by PeterU
There's actually a little bit of depth to the surface juvenileness of those movies.

Plus Dumb and Dumber was the 1990s, and one or two others.

But I agree with the main premise.

Super Bad / knocked up and all those actors that are in those movies seem to be going pretty strong
with no end in sight. A good laugh is still a good laugh

24. Not fair to put 40-year old Virgin on that list - it was actually very well done
Sure, it had some extreme moments but ultimately it was a great story and done really well!

29. You have to admit, though,
that skinny jeans on men are better than the sagging, baggy, styles of the 90's.

30. I saw that way more in the 90's.
I associate that with gangsta rap, which was primarily popular from the late 80's to the mid 90's. At least in my area, I don't see near as much sagging as I saw 10 or fifteen years ago.

32. True.
I lived in an area with a high amount of gang activity that has since been cleaned up, so that may have been the reason I saw it more back then.

18. Oasis had a big resurgence; Dave Matthews continues to be popular.
The stigma of the 00s won't be so much Dave Matthews himself as the fact that we didn't leave him in the 90s where he didn't belong, either.

35. also, the shameless rise of 'cell-phone overkill'
i.e., first-graders being issued them by parents, and people whose whole lives are tied into their phones..

hardcore entitlement-minded kids and parent enablers...

the 'tattoo as conformist quasi-rebellious fashion statement', from nerdy teens to forty-something suburban moms...(I should also include piercings)

really, really shitty, formulaic rap music...

the modern big-budget Hollywood remake of an age-old classic film (too many examples to name)

the modern big-budget Hollywood remake (or re-remake) of an age-old classic comic book hero

the "white women in peril" hysteria of national news broadcast cycles

the over-reliance on 'punditry' and always-wrong commentators in place of real news...

internet knowledge replacing wisdom

lazy over-reliance on random internet polls as a true barometer of public opinion

the final straw in the commercial/political bastardization of the the olympic games

fundie political clout peaks, scoring major victories against the queers, darwinists, harry potter fans and those who actually think church and state should be separate...

the megachurch

the decade where we KNEW fully about the upcoming dangers of global climate change, yet the powers that be clouded the issue and ignored it

the decade of the 'boner pill' and its too-cheesy commercial ads

"hey! remember when people used to REALLY be into NASCAR? back when it got higher ratings than the NFL?"

the $4 cup of coffee...sophistication never came at so cheap a price

the use of the major bookstore chains (borders or whatever) as public libraries/hookup spots/meeting places for harry potter fan clubs/a host of other loud, crowded activities...

the peak of super-suburban sprawl...some cities are at least on their 10th or 11th layer of suburbs...
