BE CAREFUL NEAR THE OCEAN
A birder in Crescent City died this past weekend after being swept off a jetty by a big wave. :(

3. I know that place.
The jetty is made out of what look like giant concrete jacks. The lighthouse is on an island at high tide too.

6. Also -- Stay away from logs on the beach!
Every year it seems someone is killed or injured when a sneaker wave comes in and rolls a big log onto them (at least on the Pacific Coast). It's amazing how little water it takes to move a massive log.

7. In addition:
DON'T LET KIDS DIG CAVES IN THE SAND!

If you see kids digging a cave, STOP THEM!

Kids are killed by collapsing sand every year too. :(

12. And another thing or two:
don't turn your back on the ocean. Even for a second.

And if you get caught in a rip current, swim diagonally, not straight back to the beach.

I lost a friend to a sneaker wave a couple of summers ago. One second he was standing there, the next he was gone. They never found his body.

Be careful out there, folks.

26. damn-- that happens just about EVERY year up here....
Never never never turn your back on the ocean if you're in the wave zone, especially during winter on the rocky north coast. I cringe when I take guests tide-pooling or just to the beach and see them ignore the waves as though they weren't dangerous.
