i have enough trouble on flat ground... so skates and i don't mix well. i was brave tonight though.. and was doing good, getting the hang of it. then i fell, and being the genius i am, i stuck my arm out to catch myself. i dislocated my hand from my wrist and had to pop it back into place. it's hurting like hell now, and i only have one hand to type with. i'm, going to see the local orthopedic specialist tomorrow.

oh yeah, i'm a graceful one!

35. thanks
my mom thinks that i was supposed to be left handed.. but in school they taught me to write with my right hand. i do almost everything with my left hand, except for writing. however, i can write with my left hand too.. it isn't as neat as my right hand, but it's definitely readable and decent. :hi:

10. Pfft...you don't need an orthopedic specialistic for a dislocation
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 10:28 PM by haruka3_2000
I dislocated my shoulder 12 years ago, and finished out the round. Sure it hangs low and hurts half the time, but specialists are for wimps.

Another time, I dislocated some bone in my hand. It was hurting for months. One day LostinVA popped it back in accidentally with an aikido move. She has the Mr. Miyagi touch.

11. OUCH!
Never, ever use your arm to break a fall (like you will after this, right?)

In 1986, I hopped a fence and used my arm to break a fall. i wound up with a hairline compression fracture, a bunch of gacked up tendons and ligaments, and a whole lot of pain and swelling.

Worst part? I was leaving the zoo when it happened. The humiliation of explaining what happened was almost as bad as the injury.

17. Don't use your butt or your back to break a fall either
A broken tailbone and a bruised kidney later, just don't do it.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 12:49 AM by Duppers
Went rollerskating for the first and last time, fell on my butt, dislocated my coccyx bone -- it hurt like hell. End of story.

edited to add that I did ice skate later, but never on wheels again.

12. Welcome to the club, sis!
I broke my elbow in July, rollerskating outdoors.

It's still not completely healed.

I never realized that rollerskating outside was akin to rollerskating on ice!

I can skate very well on an indoor roller rink, and on ice (with ice skates, of course).

But holy mackeroli! I got myself some outdoor roller skates, and the second I stood up on them, I knew it was gonna be real different!

Hope you heal soon, Ava.

I think it's taking extra-long to heal, because I broke it in the same spot nearly 30 years ago.

At least I can fully extend my arm now.

You know we love you, but you're kinda starting to remind me of Daphne from Scooby Doo. Only smarter, thank goodness. But I worry that any day now you're going to post about falling through a trap door or getting stuck behind a trick wall, because I think you've used up all the other ways to hurt yourself. :P

40. You can't really blame yourself for sticking out your arm(s) ...
... to break your fall. It's an instinct, and may well have saved you an injury to some other bit of your anatomy. Now, if you weren't wearing wrist supports, that's another story. Yes, they look dorky, but they help.

42. It takes a while to get one's skate legs, graceful or no.
Sorry you got hurt.

My own darling bride broke her wrist roller skating in our furniture-crowded house a couple weeks back, not 20 seconds after I said, "I don't think that's a good idea."

43. Gosh I'm sorry.
Wrist injuries suck. My daughter (she's 16) broke hers skiing almost three years ago and just had her third surgery dealing with the chrnoic pain and inflamation. (Not that that will happen or anything as her injury was pretty severe, but our household has become all too familier with orthopedics and wrist injuries unfortunately). Feel better.

44. You might try joining a skating group
like Houston's Urban Animals (video).

Also, inlines can be harder to learn on than standard quads. I have a nice set of quads because I didn't trust myself to inlines (hated ice-skating; never could remain upright.)

Always wear wrist protectors and kneepads. Elbow pads are optional

46. Perhaps, but I'm glad I've had mine

Even with the wrist protectors, I still have pain in the wrists sometimes from landing on my hands. You know, you hit a single piece of gravel and down you go!

I need to replace my kneepads; too many deep gouges in them ;)

Haven't skated in years, though. What kind of skates you got?
And group skating is really the best way. A great workout and great fun :D

Nothing to catch you but buttcheeks!

I hope your arm and wrist heal well. Maybe get magnetic therapy on it (if bones are broken or cracked.)
