Need help about a sweet, gentle kitteh abandoned by his humans/Dallas-Ft Worth
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 01:44 PM by ginbarn
If anyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area would like this little charmer, we sadly can't keep her, please PM me. She's shorthair, with brintle markings, sleek, and desperately needs a new home. She's the most gentle cat I've seen in a long time. She looks a bit like an African wild cat in her coloring, so Derby named her Mali. We tried to get her used to our elderly cat, but that has not worked out. Even our cockatiel was completely freaked out.

We don't want to take her to a shelter if we can avoid it, but we'll have to do it on Saturday if we can't find anyone to take her.

4. Thank you - we're so attached already
We have to take heart that the entire day she was screaming for her humans and camping out in front of, I'm sure, a similar door. We knew an arctic blast was coming so we took her in temporarily. We've done everything to try to keep her, but The Old Man isn't having it. Neither is our Dinobird.

13. also, because I just thought of it,
try your local library. The last time I took in a stray, we found a home for him with one of the librarians (of course, it didn't hurt that my sister worked at the library so I had an in). At least in my library system, there are a lot of cat lovers.

I'd love to get a friend for my kitty... but I just can't afford the vet bills at the moment.

We've fallen in love with her but I'm afraid she'll get hurt and the bird may have a heart attack!

9. I'm sorry ginbarn...
I had to edit that... I only got a fraction of my performance bonus from the 2nd quarter... I'm worried I'd be taking on more than I can handle with vet bills. :(

11. That's one of our deciding factors
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 02:03 PM by ginbarn
My medical bills are in the stratosphere. I've wiped out my savings and maxed my credit card because of it. As much as we love her, we just can't do it for a variety of reasons.

This sucks rocks. I completely understand about the vet bills.

6. Also, check YahooGroups.com
Search for animal rescue groups in your area. You will have to register, but you can post with the groups to find her a home. I found homes for 3 kittens dumped on my doorstep through one of the groups.

14. I only trust DUers to take her. Is that wrong?
I know, without reservation, that she would be in a terrific home.

7. I took in a female and she was nasty and mean to my old male cat
after I got her spayed, they're the best of friends. Do you know if she's been spayed? That seems to bring out the worst in females.

Good luck finding her a home. If I still lived in Texas...

10. She's not the one that's so upset
First off, I'm assuming she's a female. I didn't see balls and her submissive nature and predilection for laying all over Derby seems to belie that she's a female. I have no idea what her medical situation is.
The really upset parties are the Old Man and the Old Bird.

12. Awww...
I was convinced until Gracie was spayed that I'd have an upstairs cat and a downstairs cat. They absolutely refused to get along at all. I had visions of being stuck in a two-story place for the next 15 years (Gracie was only 1 at the time...)

Keep us posted.

15. Was your established kitteh a female too?
Or a male? If that would make a difference, maybe we can get her spayed at a low cost clinic and get her checked out as well. Ahhhh - I'm afraid this is a bad idea for us. We live in a small apartment, so we don't have the room for isolation without upsetting her. She's okay now, but she's going to want out of that bedroom.

17. Established cat was a 10 year old male
I kept them on separate floors until I got her spayed. If that didn't work, I'd have had to find her a new home. Fortunately, once she hit the hormonal wall (she went into heat 3 days before surgery) and got all that out of her system, they're now pretty good friends. She's definitely the alpha but they get along well.

25. I had to keep two orange boys separated for two years!
In a two bedroom apartment. Boy. That was fun. It resolved spontaneously; all of a sudden they didn't hate each other.

16. More info on Mali
Here's the story. Sunday night, ginbarn and I saw this stray cat running around on the streets. We already have a 19-year-old tuxedo cat who's very territorial and doesn't want to share our home with another cat. But this poor kitty was camping out in front of people's doors, looking completely lost and bewildered, hoping that someone would take her in. We knew that a cold spell was coming in, and our hearts went out to the little kitty, so we took her in.

I named her Mali. She's probably 10 months old and weighs no more than 10 pounds. She's an overall cream color with lots of darker brown accents, and her tail has black rings around it. She has front and back claws, and we can't tell if she's been spayed yet. LOLcat fans: Mali looks like a cousin of Serious Cat.

She was abandoned by her previous caretaker. We saw where her fur was pressed down by a collar before the schmuck removed it and dropped the cat onto the street. Mali has a healthy appetite and knows how to use a litter box just fine. She is still confused and a little depressed over her abandonment.

But Mali is a serious cuddlebug. She curls up in my lap, sleeps on top of me in bed, and has such a sweet and gentle disposition. She is very submissive and reluctant to make eye contact, but I think bonding with a permanent caretaker may help her confidence. Mali also loves to explore, and she is an excellent jumper. I can't let her out of my bedroom unsupervised because of the possibility that our tuxedo cat may attack her, and Mali also frightens our poor cockatiel without even trying.

It breaks my heart to have to give up Mali, but ginbarn and I both agree that it's for the best. We could try a no-kill shelter, but if there's a DUer in the Dallas, TX area who is looking for a sweet little kitty for Christmas, please let me know ASAP.

No pictures yet - I intend to take a few tonight.

Please consider giving sweet little Mali a loving and secure home for the holidays - and for a lifetime!

18. Look up Best Friends Animal Society on the net and then call them.
They have a record of taking in all needy animals and are a no kill/adopt organization. They even have a network where they will have people transport the kitten to their facility. They are an incredible place and I think you will have a lot of luck with them. Good luck! Julie

20. Thanks, but we really want to keep Mali out of a shelter
She's already had one jarring transition within the last week, and we'd like to place her directly with a human companion in the Dallas area. We will keep the number for Best Friends on hand, though.

23. That's affirmative
Axl, our ancient tuxedo, is just too territorial to accept her. And our cockatiel gets frightened whenever Mali gets anywhere near her cage, even though it's sturdy and raised off the floor.

26. Take a picture. Photocopy lots of flyers and put them up at cat hospitals and vets offices.
That is what I did when I had an abandoned cat. Took two days and that cat had a new home. Should be really easy with a kitten.

27. Hi Derby. I hope you find her a home really soon. My four would be most
unpleasant if I brought them a new kitty. They ran off the last female cat we had and she was their sister.

They are large and play very rough.

Merry Christmas, to both of you.

31. I know some people who might be able to take her
I wish I could, but I took in a new kitten recently, bring my total to four. If you have to go the shelter route, Dog and Kitty City is able to take animals again. The lady who handles the adoptions works incredibly hard to find homes (but as you know it is difficult right now) I will do what I can to find a home tomorrow and let you know.

33. yes
I am trying with people I know who are very pet friendly (and more likely than not to accept your kitten). And Dog and Kitty City is the Humane Society in Dallas.... no kill shelter down by Love Field. I am not sure which part of my post you are refering to with your question. :)
