How do I keep my humidifier from becoming musty smelling?

How do I keep my humidifier from becoming musty smelling?
Would a teaspooon of bleach in the water help, or is there something else?

I empty the basin and wash it out at each refill, but that doesnt help the blower motor part from smelling.

Any ideas?

1. When I bought the humidifier (it's a really big one)
there was this liquid they talked me into. I put one capful into each of the water containers and it prevents molds, etc.

2. off the top of my head I would think you wouldn't want bleach particles in the air
it's not a lot but still it would concern me (but I have asthma). How about a couple drops of essential oil -- lavender or mint perhaps?

I wonder if I can find a scented oil or something that will prevent the smell and any mold build up.

17. tea tree oil is antibacterial
I personally don't care for the scent but my sisters both like it a lot

5. The manufacturers of mine recommend cleaning with.........
a mix of white vinegar and water. It should kill the odors and get rid of any hard-water scaling. YMMV.

yeah, in the winter, indoors, it does need to be more humid.

31. Mix it in the water, but it will precipitate a bit on the electrolysis plate.
Otherwise, just clean with a thick paste; baking soda kills almost all odors.

a few drops of bleach won't hurt anything and you won't need to do it every fill.
