All hail the man who invented the Subaru
Fuck it saved my ass today. The drive home I did in almost the usual time despite the fucking five inches of snow on the road. On the side roads the bumper was pushing the snow outta the way.
I loved passing assholes in their SUVs and pickups at like 60 k listening to "war" by Edwin star and texting while they're white knuckled in the $70,000 truck they bought that can't do shit.

1. My Subie's tires don't work as well in the snow as I'd hoped
:-(

THey're the factory-original Bridgestones.

7. I drive a 4Runner
so I'm already an asshole in the eyes of many here.

But I have to say the summer tires truly suck. I remember once I was trying to get to Costco to buy some snow tires. I'm driving as carefully as possible but I find myself on a descending side street approaching an arterial. I just touch the brakes and I swear the damned sped up! As in accelerated. And I'm just off work so it's rush hour. Steady stream of cars approaching from my right and I'm about to slide into the intersection. I start to rotate counterclockwise so now it's going to be a head-on collision when at the last second I hit the gas and shoot forward into a parking space, facing the wrong way of course but at least out of danger.

4WD is nice but good tires are better. Both together are awesome.

9. Yep. I remember the year I afforded Blizzaks
for my Explorer. We were getting a foot every night for a few weeks there.

Say what you want, but snow tires and 4WD, it was like I was on rails.

Everyone in my old area (much snow, up high) had Explorers and Subarus.

3. The Pleiades?

The Pleiades, also known as M45, the Seven Sisters, Seven Stars, SED, Matariki (New Zealand Maori), Subaru (Japan), or Bitang Skora (Borneo Bidayuh) is an open cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters, and is probably the best known, and is certainly the most obvious to the naked eye.

10. just bought 2 studded snows = $190.00
Rear-wheel drive, the BEST car I've ever driven in snow&ice conditions. Front/rear weight distribution is almost 50/50.

89 Volvo 240 (not a pic of my car, but it's identical)

i love my 240 wagon in the winter. the weight distribution is fantastic, plus it's a manual, which makes it even better

11. My company "fleet" consists of
3 wranglers, one CJ8 and a Subaru. I'd rather drive that Subaru on snow and ice than any of the Jeeps. Unless the snow is particularly deep, I can get the Subaru up unpaved mountain roads with no slipping or crabbing. I am seriously considering getting rid of the wranglers and replacing them with Outbacks or Foresters. My husband, a jeep fanatic, grudgingly admitted the Subaru is much easier to handle on the slick stuff.

15. I've liked the couple I've driven, but I just can't accept the mileage penalty
or the price quite frankly.

For the record I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier. While I wanted a manual transmission, I went for the automatic because of the traction control. While I got crushed on mileage (based on experic=nce with other vehicles I think the automatic is something like a 20% hit) I do like the traction control this time of year. No more tip-toe finessing of the accelerator, just step on the gas and go!

I have found front wheel drive to really give a boost in snow driving--albeit it isn't even as close to fun as rear wheel drive--woo hoo whippin' shitties, OH YEAH!

Of course, I pretty much only drive on paved roads in the winter, and that makes a difference. One of my favcrite memories was an '89 Geo Metro, I was driving in snow so deep that the drag on the undercarriage would cause me to slowly lose speed and then stop. I'd just back up, get a running start in my own tracks and go another 200 yards or so. I gotta tell ya, I was laughing my ass off--and I knew if I had that much trouble getting to work, so would the customers. Yeah, that was an easy night at work that night.... :)

17. He was probably buds with the guy who invented my 4WD Element
First time driving in the snow evah this winter, and so far nothing untoward to report. With the brand-new snowshoes we slapped on it last month, it's the perfect vehicle for this weather.

Joyeux Noel! :hi:
