Death Race was remade recently? I just saw an ad for the DVD of it. Did it play theaters?

I don't remember EVER seeing ads for this movie; and believe me, this is one movie that I would have noticed, being a HUGE fan of the original.

From the ad, this one looks like an all fluff and special effects orgy with no substance or social critique that the other movie had.

Like so many other remakes, I'm sure this is utterly devoid of anything that made the original so wonderfully great.

Did it play theaters? Or is it a straight to video flop?

1. IIRC, very briefly.

I remember seeing an ad for it and thinking it looked horrible. I liked the original a lot when I saw it as a youth.

but that was on Sci-Fi channel.

They changed the whole story of it, threw out the social commentary and turned it into yet another gritty bad-guy versus bad-guy movie (i.e., prisoners fighting to the death, or UFC by custom-built vehicle.)

I didn't bother wasting money on it. It was bad enough I was forced to waste a miniscule portion of my satellite bill getting the advertising left and right on sci-fi...
