I'm watching 5 species of birds having Christmas breakfast on my deck...
There is a pair of cardinals, male and female; a purple finch; white-breasted nuthatches; slate-colored juncos; and black capped chickadees...
I love bird watching!
Last week Hubby saw two pileated woodpeckers out there, and we've seen flickers, downy woodpeckers, blue jays, some kind of sparrows (I can't tell the difference between them), and we saw a great horned owl too...we also have barred owls in our wood, we can hear them, but I haven't seen them...

It's "cat teevee" - the kitties LOVE watching them out there!

2. Yes, they are! And they're so "owly" in the way they sound...
I wasn't aware that there are only a couple of kinds of owls that actually "hoot" until I got my bird book...
The other one that is SO loud is the whippoorwill...there was one sitting on the deck during the night last summer, and it woke me up, but it was so cool...it sat there saying its name for about an hour!

3. Nice! I get a different assortment, depending upon weather and time of day.
Daily there is one black crested night heron that flies down river in the morning and returns at night.
Beautiful bird, bluish grey with a long black feather that comes down from it's head.

Egrets and herons, less reliable and not daily.

Cormorants from time to time, and mudhens.

Resident geese and ducks dialy

But the best is when there's a feeding frenzy, a run of minnows causes it, I think.

Then there's a crazy avian parade, dozens of really big herons and egrets posted on the banks, boats, and pilings.

And scores of cormorants diving and other birds in the water.

I got it on video once, it's still a marvel to see, happens for or four times a year.

Glad to hear from another bird fan!

5. i had bald eagles overfly the other day
my pets (parrots) were not best pleased altho the chance of an eagle chasing a parrot seems slim to me

:)

Thanks for sharing that...there are mud hens at the local man-made pond, and I love their voices, but had forgotten their name. Images.google is your friend.

Edit: NYC_SKP posted about the mud hens..good enough, the entire thead is fun.

8. I'm using Sarahbellum's at the moment, got it set up on a piece of
Tupperware atop a bar stool *lol* just to get it at the right height and angle to get the tree on the deck and the top of the picnic table where the seed is all scattered...
Just a bit ago there was a house finch, a purple finch, and a downy woodpecker out there, along with a couple kinds of sparrows and the cardinals and the juncos...

9. We get a lot of bald eagles out here; we have just over 3 acres of woods
on a river, so we're in a great spot for birding :-)
I love eagles.
