1. And partly because Steptoe and Son was good to begin with.
Amazing what comes off a pilot venture... Ray Galton and Alan Simpson wrote 6 plays for Comedy Playhouse, when it came to Play #4, they were over budget and couldn't figure out what to write. But write they did, and "The Offer" was made. Turned out viewer reaction was fantastic, and Ray and Alan were persuaded to spin it into a series... thus Steptoe and Son was born.

2. I remember watching it in syndication when I was little and finding it
funny. I find it even funnier today.
