To DU'ers working in retail and in service industry...

My heart goes out to you all every holiday season. Seems like the holidays bring out the worst in people, and many of you seem to bear the brunt of people's poor temper.

:hi:

1. Seconded.
And may you have kind and understanding bosses and supervisors and such. That goes overlooked a lot of times, I think.

:hi:

2. I worked at a department store as a Christmas temp. I know all about it.
Luckily most people were patient and kind. It was those very few who were asses. And they are usually big time asses.

3. Thirded!
I used to work in retail and fast food, and around this time, some people really treat folks in those jobs extra bad, it seems.

I doff my hat to all of you, and thank you for the good service you provide me.

6. I was telling my kids that last night..
We had gone out to eat last night and the place was packed...made me think of the overwhelmed looking cashiers I had seen when I had gone Xmas shopping. At least the restaurant servers were getting tips (hopefully good ones)...the cashiers were probably not getting a penny extra for all the extra people they had to check out in the department stores.

My daughter works at a movie theater and worked 9 to 4 on Xmas Day. She did say that alot of movie goers said "thanks for being here today" and "I'm sorry you are having to work" as they bought tickets from her.

I know she appreciated their comments..especially since her line was so long the whole time she was there, nonstop.

7. When I was a cashier in my younger days...
it made a difference to hear people say "thank you". Or, just for them to be civil.

I try to take the time to have a bit of conversation with cashiers and waiters/waitresses. You never know if they've been having a miserable day, and just a hello and a smile can go a long way.

11. Seemed a little better this year.
But the extreme weather and sour economy held it down some I think.

It was a very muted shopping season in terms of asshole customers.

for free shit. Its usually in restaurants or whereever they can bitch about some little thing until someone gives them a free coupon to shut them up. When I worked in the main office for the movie theatre chain we would get these stupid complaint letters that usually called for some passes to be mailed out. About half of these letters were from the same fucking people every two weeks.

These people arent poor they come in with their fancy clothes and cell phones and diamond rings. But then bitch cause its too cold and how I need to kiss their ass.

14. My sister would send letters in to companies saying how she liked their product
And would get coupons for that.

The restaurants my mother frequents give her free appetizer coupons about every other visit because she is kind to them.

Those people who are wearing fancy clothes who bitch about it being too cold need to buy a fancy sweater and shut the fuck up...LOL.

18. I get impatient with people who are impatient...lol.
It ticks me off when people yell at cashiers and waiters/waitresses, etc. We went wrong with the mentality that "the customer is always right". Sometimes, they are, but clearly not all the time.
