Old internet sites you remember
What are some sites you used to go to a lot, but don't now, either because you got bored with them or they aren't there anymore?

Mine:

BeSeen.com--the HTML chatrooms. They were the first ones I ever found, and I was a "regular" at Joe's All Night Diner for a long time. That's actually where I first met ThinkBlue1966. :)

GoPlay.com--it had a free webpage creator, and just about everyone I knew had a GoPlay webpage. That was where my very first webpage was.

Angelfire.com--another place where lots of us had free webpages and sites. I think it might still be there, but I don't even remember my login info.

LiveJournal.com--I used this for years, but I've all but abandoned it recently.

1. Media Whores Online.
Maybe it doesn't really qualify as old, but it's been dark for many years. I loved that site, visited it often.

2. Planet Out
planetout.com

That's where I met Mrs. V. :loveya:

We both used to frequent CNN message boards, which don't exist as such anymore. There we met a gay retired former Southern Baptist pastor in Kingston (?), NY.

A recent # 1 bookmark that I don't use anymore is sparkpeople.com, a diet & exercise recording and encouragement site. It is a fantastic tool and I have returned to it several times in the last couple of months, but I only stay a day or two.

It seems to have carved out a niche market among sci-fi and fantasy Fangirl types. Lots of Harry Potter, Lost, BSG, etc over there.

with an old-school gigantic blog back in the day (one huge page that went on forever, in plain text)...he would intersperse the greatest links o' the day with diatribes about his kidnapped daughter. I've been trying like the dickens to remember what it was called.

Anyone else remember?

5. Angelfire was my first web host back when I was 12.
Sparked a love of design that has stuck with me. Then I moved on to Tripod, and a few other hosts. Now I have free server space on my friend's web server. On that note, I oughta redesign/finish my website.

I used to use LiveJournal a few years back but abandoned it for a more localized site to share journals with friends.

It had the first message board I ever frequented - my friend who lived just up the road and I would log on and chat with each other rather than use the phone because it was so novel to be able to chat on the Internet.

14. There was one with "computer-generated personality simulations"
which answered questions from the public, each in their own style. Sometimes the personalities would get into arguments. I learned of it several years ago from a thread like this! And cannot remember its name. The "main" personalities were supercomputers (and each personality had an appropriate avatar).

Just checked - they are still running and seem to have new stuff.

www.pigwar.com - A website about the Pig War between the US and the British in the Pacific Northwest.

http://www.preserveusfromthehouseofclocks.com - Started life as a fictional website in a fairly obscure Gene Wolfe/Neil Gaiman collaboration, became a real website that caught the mood of the original work pretty well. Still around, but hasn't been updated for a long time.

22. Walter Miller's Home Page
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9179/walter.htm

It is archived there, but no longer being updated last I checked.

Also, I enjoyed the Sandbox on CNN's financial page. They had games and I won lots of stuff like fishing hats, -tshirts, golf tees, keychains, you name it, then they stopped it. I was good at that game back then.

The Blondie Archive
http://www.blondie.ausbone.net/

It's gone now too. It had zillions of Deborah Harry pictures. I spent hours and hours there.

My old web site:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://kasey.carolina.net

VRML
Cosmos and SGI were great great sites. I must have spent literally hundreds of hours building my apartment for Cybertown. That was a great site as well. And who could forget Floops. RIP Floops. We still miss you.

Dammit! Bring back VRML RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRML

I enjoyed it so much. I built a kickass bedroom with Blondie posters on the wall and Elvira posters. It had a kickass library and all sorts of goodies. And that was only on the trial version of Internet Space Builder

I just found it. I am going to download an XP version if I can and play until my heart is content.

27. Heaven's Gate -- the suicide cult
When that group committed suicide in California after warning what was about to happen on a bizarre website, that was one of the first times the that mass American media audience tuned into the web. Someone has kept the site going, I suppose for historical interest:

http://www.heavensgate.com/

I was using newsgroups for several years before the web took off. The first web site I heard of was mentioned on a news show, that said there was a new way to communicate over the internet, called the world wide web, that allowed for pictures to be transmitted; that site was called "Tom's Toilet" and it was just a picture of some guy's toilet (not pornographic or anything -- just a toilet).

I remember using geocities a lot, even for a course I was teaching at the time. That's when geocities was divided into "neighborhoods." I think the academic neighborhood was called "Athens."

30. Fucked Company
I worked for a moronic company at the time, so my coworkers and I made regular visits to FC to see if there were any tidbits about our corporate overlords and the future of the corporation. (Quite often, there were!)

Also Delphi Forums. The ladies on the thyroid boards literally saved my life with their knowledge and support. Once I got treatment, I was honored to do the same for newcomers.

It closed before the 2004 primaries, I think. Smart, funny, well-informed chatters.

From there I moved to chatforamerica (the old Dean site) which is, of course, now defunct.

Is Delphi still around? I used to go to one of the chatrooms there, a long time ago.

I also remember setting up a group for Utah teens to get together and hookup.

Wow, how stupid was I? Of course, I was like 16 and horny, so I didn't really think of the problems it would create. Regardless, Yahoo didn't seem to care and the group stayed open well after I graduated HS.

When I was pregnant with my now 10 year old, I met tons of people online in a May Moms '98 group (we even had a few meet ups). For all I know, the board's still active.

66. What about disgruntled.com....I loved
going there and reading the rants of people who like me just *loved* their job.

I ranted once about the cheap Christmas gift an employer gave us....

68. Internet Infidels...
one of the first groups I sought out
when I plugged in.

I loved it.

Don't go there so much since I figured
out that I am NOT in the minority I
THOUGHT I was.

Poll after poll on DU shows non-believers
to outnumber belivers by a large number.

Speaking out IRL has led me to discover,
if not a silent majority, at least a larger
minority than I ever realized existed.
