HIVES!
I have the worst case of hives. I am going crazy. I take a Benadryl and it helps but it puts me to sleep. I take Claratin (sp?) and it helps but the hives do not go away. I shower and it helps for a little while... This has happened before but not in a few years... I think it's because I have a cold virus.

I am itching all over! Ahhhhhhhh! Even the inside of my nostrils are itchy.

I hate this.

1. Oh you poor thing...I had chronic hives for three years, so I know
the misery! Benadryl kicked mine into high gear and kept me awake for three nights straight the first time they put me on it; steroids and ice packs were the only things that worked. They finally went away last year, what a relief...
I am so sorry you have them! They're so miserable...

3. If you are open to herbal remedies, the following might help:
from http://www.herbs2000.com/disorders/hives.htm
Supplements and herbs

Supporting the immune system and avoiding the source of the problem wherever possible is the best cure and option to boost overall health, however in cases where hives are recurrent or are persistent some forms of internal supplements can help tame allergic symptoms and other causes. For the treatment of hives the main vitamins are vitamin C and vitamin B12. In cases of hives brought on by an overexposure to solar radiation the beta-carotene is particularly effective as a treatment option. The best method to ingest and supplement the vitamin B12 is by dissolving it under the tongue and swallowing. In the long term treatment of recurring hives the essential fatty acids are necessary, as they build up prostaglandins which are essential in the body for the promotion of overall immune system function, as well as in the maintenance of a healthy skin and complexion. The oil of the evening primrose herb is an excellent source of and essential fatty acid called, gamma-linolenic acid or (GLA), which is an important component in the fight against hives and its symptoms.

Without the possibility of any side effects the given herbal remedies can help reduce the symptoms of hives.

The rash due to the hives can be cured in a very short time using the juice made form the leaves of the stinging nettle. This can be used in dosages of a tbsp. thrice a day. The appearance of hives in many sensitive people is the result of some biological preparations, such as arnica and chamomile. The inflammation and the pain that comes with the onset of hives can be reduced and minimized using herbs such as the horsetail, valerian and birch leaves, St. John's wort, lemon balm and peppermint, these herbs can be drunk 3 cups daily as a combination tea, to ward off the worst effects of hives.

From what I've read, hives are the result of an allergic reaction. You'll either need to be tested for allergies or try and think back to what you've eaten or come into contact with today that might have caused it.

Good luck!
I've only ever had major heat rash and that was miserable-making too.

4. You could have developed a new allergy
A trip to the doctor would seem like a good idea.

5. Zyrtec
is pretty good.

I had hives every day for seven years and was on massive doses of vistaril which helped but kept me groggy. The hives stopped after I had acupuncture (a series of treatments). I have never had them again and that was in 2001.

7. When my son had hives we'd not only use the oral Benadryl but
also the topical Benadryl (gel worked better than cream). Seemed to speed up the process.

Sorry about the itching!

8. Eeep. I'm sorry.
I haven't had a case of hives in ages. I don't think anything helps but time.

9. Funny you should mention that...it turns out that I DO have a medication allergy
I was going crazy trying to figure out what in my fiancee's house was giving me hives. THey are almost gone now (it was a medication.)

So yeah, I feel for you,

10. I'm going to agree with those who have said Zyrtec. It won't make
the hives go away, but it does stop the itch for about 24 hours without knocking you out. At least that's been my experience. It's available without prescription now. I've had chronic hives for a couple of years now and that's what I use when I have a break out.

12. I feel your pain....
I have chronic hives off and on (usually brought on by extreme temperatures and stress).

My pharmaceuticals of choice are: Benedryl at night, then Zyrtec and Tagamet during the day (Tagamet is a Beta histamine blocker, IIRC). Claritin did nothing to alleviate mine.

healing vibes!

13. Oh no!
Hives suck.

I had them for a few years. The only thing that cured them was quitting my job. Worked like a charm.

14. Go To Doctor.
You could be allergic to AIR! :P

Hope you stop itching soon. I've been itching the last few days too, but that's just cause I accidentally wore nylon. I'm paying for that dearly now. I hate the way nylon makes my skin turn blood red and burn like hell, then blister and itch like crazy on top of it all.
