iTouch and Bose docking station questions....
I bought an itouch and a bose docking station. It worked for one day and then today when I docked the itouch, no music would play.

I returned the station and came home with the new one. This wont work either.

Any ideas why this is happening?

I am NEW to this ipod thing, maybe I pressed a button inadvertently, but I can hear music coming out of the speakers on the ipod, just nothing on the docking station.

HELP....

1. The sound comes out of the headphone jack, not out of the base.
I'm pretty sure this is right. I don't use my iPod that often but that's how it is with my iPhone.

When it worked the first time, did you not have to plug in external speakers, it the base docking station the little one that comes with the iPod or is it something else?

3. Here are tips from one of the BOSE manuals.
No sound • Increase the volume setting for the system.
• Make sure the SoundDock® battery is charged or the system is plugged in, your iPod® is turned on, and
a music track is selected and playing.
• Remove your iPod from the dock, wait 5 seconds, then reseat it. You may need to do this a few times.
• With another sound device, be sure your iPod is removed from the dock and the second device is
properly connected, turned on and set to play.
• If the other sound device is connected and playing, press any button on the remote control to activate
the system. Review “Playing another sound device” on page 8.
• Unplug the SoundDock Portable system and remove the battery from the back of the system to com-
pletely shut off any power to it. Then reattach the battery and plug the system in again.

No sound and your iPod
is not charging • Make sure your iPod is firmly seated in the dock and the SoundDock Portable system battery is charged
or the power supply is plugged in properly.
• Remove your iPod from the dock, wait 5 seconds, and return it to the dock.
• An iPod that has buttons and no click-wheel control does not recharge while it plays and may need
recharging.
• If the power supply is in use, make sure the power outlet is functioning properly.
• Unplug the SoundDock Portable system and remove the battery from the back of the system to com-
pletely shut off any power to it. Then reattach the battery and plug the system in again.

Your iPod does
not respond to the
SoundDock remote
control
• Remove your iPod from the dock, wait 5 seconds, then reseat it. You may need to do this a few times.
• Your iPod software may need to be updated.
• Try the remote from a different location. If it works there, strong lighting or other conditions may be
causing the problem. Refer to “Using the remote” on page 7 for further details.
• Make sure nothing blocks the infrared (IR) signal path from the remote to your SoundDock Portable
system. Wipe off the small lens on the front end of the remote.
• Check the remote control battery to make sure the + side is up, as shown on page 10.
• Replace the remote control battery.
• Unplug the SoundDock Portable system and remove the battery from the back of the system to com-
pletely shut off any power to it. Then reattach the battery and plug the system in again.

4. If it's an actual iPod docking station there will be a connector on it that goes into the slot...
Where you would normally attach a USB cord. If it's just a generic MP3 played base station it will probably have a plug that needs to go into the headphone jack.

5. If this is made by Bose, that may be your answer
I made the mistake of buying their overpriced headphones once--super-light and comfy, but at about 30 days, they started sproinging apart. (I wear a headset for work 5-6 days a week--on and off--so not exactly rough usage.) Returned them and 30 days later, the bastids fell apart again. Exchanged them for Sony's Studio Standards (which also aren't what they used to be). Plastic shit. My son scolded me (he's a Full Sail grad, so I figure he knows what he's talking about) and said that Bose is all advertising. He claims the brand in general has a horrible reputation amongst professional audio/computer people. Yes, their speaker systems sound great in their showroom (that room they plunk you in to "show" you the difference) but not so much IRL, and you can actually build perfect replicas using parts from Radio Shack. My mom also fell for their little stereo system, with similar dissatisfaction.

Maybe you need to take your iPod shopping and try out other models?

7. That's too bad--I have a wave stereo with the CD changer, and LOVE it.
Have had it for a couple of years (even have my TV/DVD audio running through it), and just bought a second one for the bedroom. I can't recommend mine highly enough.

6. If you exchange it, I'm really happy with my JBL Radial and totally recommend it.
It has a nice warm sound, sounds nice turned down quietly or really really loud, and mine has given me not a single problem in two years.

The only thing I don't like is the remote. I'd rather have a larger one with a display to make it easier to move from one song to the next.

8. ***Update****
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 11:55 AM by malta blue
I took the itouch and the Bose back to Best Buy this morning (YES I had my receipt) and it turns out the Bose sytem I bought is not compatible with the 2nd gen itouch. geek Squad boy said he couldn't believe that it actually worked even once.

So, I got a different docking station and they said it should work./
Thanks for your help DUers!

On edit - I spoke too soo - this thing doesn't work either....perhaps I was never meant to own such hi-tech stuff because I cannot figure out WTF is going on with it.

I will be driving BACK to the store this afternoon and I will not leave until someone makes music come out of the speaker for me THERE. At 20 miles each way, and this afternoon being my 4th trip in three days, I am ready to lose my mind!

10. If you do find one compatible, I'd love to know. My daughter has
an iPod Touch 2nd gen & I'd like to get her a dock. I'm glad I saw your post first because I've been eyeing the Bose...
