HDTV Challenged Seeking HDTV Guru
We just got a new HD television and when you watch an HD movie on it, the volume is waaaaaaay low. When you switch to regular TV, it blasts you out of the room if you don't turn the volume down first. We've got Dish. Does anyone else have this happen and if so, what can be done so I don't have to get one of these?

1. My guess is figure out the volume controls on the DVD player or the Dish Network box.
Sorry I don't have HDTV but my SDTV setup with the Time Warner Cable box and the DVD Recorder - both can independently control their volume outputs. I know HDMI outputs could in theory eliminate this problem but because I don't think there's many DVDs or satellite boxes that are HDMI-only output - they would have good old fashioned ANALOG component video outputs - then they'd have a volume control setting for that so that the audio output can be balanced.

See if there's volume control settings on either box, and adjust accordingly.

Mark.

3. Thanks a bunch
This HD stuff is taking some getting used to, but not as bad as going from DOS to Windows.:)

2. Here's something to check:

My guess is that your playing your sound through the HDTV's built in speakers. And for some reason your new TV is unable to equalize the differences between an HD Dolby 5.1 audio feed and a standard TV stereo feed.

OK, now that I've written it down, I have an idea. Try looking at the Dish Menu System Setup -> Dolby Digital. It might be set to Dolby 5.1 right now, try changing it to Stereo. That might keep the sound level from changing so dramatically.

Hope this helps.

4. Thank you
I'll ask my spousal unit to check that out tomorrow. I think we will be able to feed it through the stereo, but we haven't tried that yet. That I know how to operate. I just saw my first movie on HD, The Dark Knight. It was great, but I had to turn the volume up up to like 90.
