Now remember. It's 25 years from their first album to qualify. For the life of me, I can't understand why Genesis isn't in. Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Steve Hackett. Pre Abacab. This band was great.

41. The problem with the Misfits is the same problem with a lot of bands that aren't there yet
Too goddamned many people have been in the band for you to know exactly WHO to induct. And usually (as it is with the Misfits) you have principal members who fucking hate each other's guts and would probably never agree on the list.

Obviously Graves and the rest of the NewShits crowd shouldn't be eligible, but who would be?

I don't acknowledge the existence of "The Misfits" after Halloween 1983. But even before then, you're talking a lot of people.

* Glenn Danzig (Glenn Anzalone) – vocals, electric piano (1977–1983)
* Diane DiPiazza – bass guitar (1977)
* Jimmy Battle – guitar (1977)
* Manny Martínez – drums (1977)
* Jerry Only (Gerald Caiafa) – bass guitar, vocals (1977–1983)
* Franché Coma (Frank Licata) – guitar (1977–1978)
* Mr. Jim (Jim Catania) – drums (1978)
* Bobby Steele – guitar (1978–1980)
* Joey Image (Joey Poole) – drums (1978–1979)
* Arthur Googy (Joseph McGuckin) – drums (1980–1982)
* Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein (Paul Caiafa) – guitar (1980–1983)
* Robo (Roberto Valverde) – drums (1982–1983)
* Brian Damage (Brian Keats) – drums (1983)

You could probably leave Brian Damage out, because he never played on any records, and the Hall of Fame inductions are always based on recorded output. But that leaves 12 people on stage, most of whom hate at least one of the others. It would be entertaining at least. :rofl:

He played the drums on "Walk Among Us" which was probably their best record. At least out of the albums that actually were released when they should have been (as opposed to "Static Age" or "12 Hits from Hell", which still isn't legally released)

47. He should be in as a producer, if not as a musician.
The records he produced usually did better than his own stuff.

In addition to his own recordings, Rundgren has produced albums for Halfnelson (first incarnation of Sparks), New York Dolls, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oates, Ian and Sylvia (on their "Great Speckled Bird" album), Meat Loaf, Patti Smith, The Tubes, Tom Robinson Band, XTC, Bad Religion, Cheap Trick, The Hello People, Hiroshi Takano, Bourgeois Tagg, 12 Rods, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Psychedelic Furs, Steve Hillage, The Band, The American Dream, and many others. The troubled XTC sessions produced the album Skylarking, now considered a high point for band and producer despite its acrimonious origin. Rundgren's production of Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell helped that album become one of the very top selling LPs released in the 1970s. The industry regard for Rundgren's production work has been a lofty one: Jim Steinman, with whom Rundgren worked on Bat Out of Hell, has said in interviews that "Todd Rundgren is a genius and I don't use that word a lot."

Also, Gabriel as a solo artist qualifies and is not in.

This I do not get as well. Along with his musical innovations he has done a ton for the industry technologically.

When he left the band after The Lamb Lies Down, the remaining members auditioned hundreds of singers. Didn't miss a beat when Collins took over. Song for song, Trick of the Tail could be their best. Wind and the Wuthering and And Then There were Three are no slouches, either.

11. I enjoy those albums
but have mixed feelings due to the context in which Gabriel left/was encouraged to leave. It makes it hard for me to listen to early post-Gabriel Genesis without thinking of what a crappy thing a bunch of young guys did to a bandmate whose wife was having pregnancy complications. I know Collins and a couple of the other guys have publicly apologized in more recent years, but it's still a bitter pill to swallow.

Regardless, what Gabriel has done after Genesis is worthy in its own right. They both deserve induction, as a band and as a solo artist.

21. I won't tell you how old I was when Lamb came out.
I spent a lot of time in high school trying to ferret out its meaning. I still have my "annotated" version of the liner notes hanging around somewhere.

That's a great album to get high by, as is Selling England. I love the story about the big fight about "The Battle of Epping Forest" ("Here come the cavalry"). "Firth of Fifth" was one of the first things I learned by ear on the piano (versus sheet music).

36. Normally I'd Say 'But Genesis Wasn't Really Rock'
But then, neither was Chic.

A lot of rockers and critics hate hate hate bands like Rush, Genesis, and Yes because they make it look so difficult that they intimidate people from picking up instruments, compared to a band like the Kinks, who, you walk out of a show and go, "shit, I can do THAT!"

I'm not a big fan of the Jon & Vangelis stuff, m'self. It's musically OK, but not my cup of tea lyrically.

Best I could gather he wasn't on the current Yes tour because he was having vocal problems, not because of his other projects. I'm assuming those problems will be resolved and he'll be out with them again.

92. The Kinks did some fairly complex stuff.
Yes I know they invented power chord rock.

"Preservation Act II" is complex and ranges over lots of different styles -- vaudeville "Oh Where is Love", "Mirror of Love"; hard rock -- "He's Evil", recitative -- all over the place, Salvation Army Band -- "We are the New Centurions, Shepherds of the Nation".

"Preservation Act II" is not to be confused with "Village Green Preservation Society".

Preservation Act II is a double album. The lyrics are amazing. The critics didn't like it but I think it's much better than "Tommy" and it has never gotten its due as a rock opera.

Ray Danniels is one of the biggest fucking assholes in the music industry. He's all but destroyed every band he's ever done business with, with Rush being the only exception. I was in a prog band for a while where three of us were keyboardists (not all of us played keys in the band; we all just played a bunch of instruments).

When we auditioned a keyboardist they had to be able to play the opening to Firth of Fifth along with whatever else they showed us (one guy had transcribed it, in case the auditioner didn't know it). We weeded out a LOT of people that way. :rofl:

89. ELP is excellent.
They used classical stuff well, too.
When I was in college, everybody was listening to The Great Gate of Kiev.

And in the middle of "I Believe in Father Christmas" there is an excerpt from the Lieutenant Kije Suite by Sergei Prokofief.

Good stuff.

The best rock musicians are trained in classical and/or jazz.

People who cut their teeth on classical music and get bored with it generally go into jazz, as classical and jazz are the only two complex forms of music.

Much better than anything Blondie did, IMHO.

In fact Ben Orr (the Cars' bass player) was referred to as the male Debbie Harry.

My all-time favorite album, ever.

R.I.P. Mr. Orr. Your talents are missed.

on edit: Do you have Ben Orr's solo album (The Lace)? I just DL'ed it from Amazon after having not listened to it for years, as I no longer have a turntable or tape deck.

Great album!

49. The "Seconds Out" Genesis...Hackett's last tour...was a friggin' BEAST.
I saw them at Winterland...the "Wind and Wuthering" tour, basically the same set list that ended up as the "Seconds Out" album.

"Supper's Ready" was unbelievable...the photo on the front cover of Seconds Out:

...this was the "With the Gods of Magog swarming around, the Pied Piper leads his children underground" section. Collins came down from the drums and stood there, in a white suit, hit by those white lights, surrounded by the fog machines, and spit out the lyrics while the band just cranked. The unquestionable highlight of the show was the interplay between Collins and Chester Thompson when they would both be playing drums, especially "Los Endos."

Hackett was especially impressive, playing his gold-top Les Paul with passion and precision and a refreshing lack of "rock star moves" (he basically stood still and played).

As a fan of the "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind And Wuthering" Genesis, I felt betrayed and pissed off when they released "...and Then There Were Three." I knew that Hackett's departure meant that he'd be taking a big chunk of the band's sound with him, but I never dreamed that they would re-invent themselves as a pop act.

Later attempts to jump back into the "jamming prog" arena (like "Second Home By The Sea") lacked any true heat or sincerity. It was as if they were tossing a bone to the long-time fans so that they would continue to buy Genesis albums.

Public Enemy

No surprise, though.

It took 5+ years for Jan Wenner's little boondoggle to induct The Velvet Underground, maybe the most influential and important band in rock history after The Beatles

The MC5, Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith had to wait forever, too - while Madonna got in instantly

104. The Monkees
They started out as a manufactured image.

But fought for their own creativity once the media caught on to the 'act'.

They won their battle.

They followed up with 'Headquarters', which is one hell of an album.

Even Michael Nesmith got a couple of songs in before they got total autonomy.

Their stuff is solid, and rather substantial given they were seen as a "bubblegum" band.

Unlike singers who have nothing to do with rock and roll, the Monkees genuinely deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

126. The guy from Rolling Stone who basically runs the Hall of Fame...
.....HATES the Monkees. They will never get in.

Now I LOVE the Monkees (My favorite song ever by them was "Don't Call On Me", and "All Of Your Toys" would have been a bigger hit than "I'm a Believer" if it had ever been released), have the box set, all the show DVD's and several Mike Nesmith albums........but on pure objectivity the Don Kirshner era using other musicians is probably a good enough reason to keep them out. It was a black mark they were never going to erase. They really only had less than one year of chart power after that, and some of the stuff they were doing at the bitter end as a trio by their own choosing was as bad/worse as the stuff that ended up on the first two albums.

There are a lot of bands I don't think anyone can make any argument as to why they aren't in (like Genesis or Rush), but there are just enough reasons to keep the Monkees out.

133. Ultimately, I still concede.
But I can still counter most of your admittedly good points:

The group's bitter breakdown can be equated with the Mamas and the Papas**, who also had a 2 year stint, and yet they were inducted into the hall of fame...

Also, Madonna** (a solo vocal pop artist and not a band, so she rather had to use other musicians) did not write some of her most famous songs ("Material Girl", "Like a Virgin", and a handful of others), did not play instruments, et cetera... :D

But the black mark of being set up by Kirschner still kills the deal. Until other made-up boy and girl bands end up in the HoF (e.g. spice girls, backstreet boys, menudo), and no doubt the Rolling Stone guy would love to do that. Which would be the biggest insult of them all should any modern made-up groups get in and not "The Monkees". Kirschner should have been honest in the first place. A can of worms, that was... oh well.

** source of these claims came from wikipedia

134. Your points are well taken
Not a huge Mama's and Papa's fan, but they are sort of ingrained in the natural development of the folk/rock era of the 60's, well-respected, etc.....

As far as Madonna......well she is not rock, but let's face it, pop is rock in it's own way. And a solo vocalist gets the pass as far as playing instruments, just like no one will discredit Elvis for having studio session men, or Sinatra for having Count Basie's orchestra behind him. It's tougher to make an argument for a band when for two full albums it was just mostly one or two members singing (A trend that sadly came back during the post "Head" days as well).

I really don't think the Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls will ever get in. The only upside to putting anyone in that Hall Of Fame is getting them to perform on stage if they can or show how smart one is for knowing music history, and 15 years from now no one will care about them or want to see them and certainly no one will use it to display music knowledge cred.

138. I must admit, Husker, though I despise all but NY Dolls and Iggy
all are legit. I believe The Stooges get in this year. KISS was the MOST overrated band- along with AC/DC. Ted's politics are killing him. The Runaways- interesting. Led the way for all the Girrrrlll bands.

139. I have one more pick for the HOF...
The Shangri Las. Their dramatic songs described exactly what a rock-n-roller is. "He's good bad but he's not evil!"
