At least not for the FBS. FCS, Div-II and Div-III have all managed to figure out a playoff and their champions are recognized by the NCAA
It is such a joke: This year there were 34 post season games! That's more than enough to determine a true champion from a field of 32 let alone a field of 16 which is what I prefer:
_________ Take all eleven conference champions (Utah, Boise, I'm looking out for you), add five at-large bids and then seed them according to strength (polls, computers, ouiji board, etc.) and let them have it out. This gives all FBS teams a path to the championship.
Play the first first three rounds in the home stadium of the higher seed as the FCS, Div-II and Div III do. Then play the championship game in some predetermined neutral location.
This preserves the meaning of the regular conference season and because winning the conference is a priority, teams wouldn't be as afraid of scheduling tough OOC games as they are today where a single OOC loss can ruin one's title chances.
Teams with winning records that aren't one of the 16 would play in bowl games. Yeah, a bowl game is a consolation prize, just like it is today for 66 of the 68 teams who played in them this year.
