Weird. I had a dream in fluent French last night.

and I don't speak French.

I've been to Montreal a half dozen times, and I hear French spoken here in NYC a lot, so I recognize French when I hear it, but that the extent of my familiarity with the language. But somehow I was speaking and being spoken to in French in this dream.

But that's about it. I don't even know any Frenchman named Pepe'.

if in that dream my comprehension was accurate, meaning I really know these languages (I've studied each, but never gotten fluent) but my brain gets in the way, or if I just think I know them in my dream.

But I'd love to learn another language or two. If this happens every so often and it's a sign that my mind is finally willing to start thinking outside of english I'll start studying other languages again.

I certainly have the time for it now.

Though Spanish would be the obvious language to start studying again here. I don't get to travel to Montreal nearly often enough to really get to practice French.

I wonder the same thing you do though. That's kind of weird. But when I woke up I definitely understood the gist of the conversation.

Maybe I've just never been immersed enough to have to speak it, but I constantly translate in my head, rather than speaking. Too much OCD in my genes, I guess. I've tried French and Latin the most, but I've also studied Spanish and Arabic. For some reason, I did best at Arabic, maybe because it was the last one I tried to learn, or maybe because it was so different than English that I couldn't just translate as I went along. But I was forced to drop it, for time constraint reasons.

One of my strangest experiences was after leaving an Arabic course where we weren't allowed to speak English, and the professor only spoke Arabic. After a two hour class I was walking across campus trying to schedule the rest of my day, and having a dickens of a times getting my thoughts in order, until finally I realized I was doing it all in Arabic--I hadn't shifted back into English. Since I had almost no vocabulary in Arabic, I was having trouble organizing my plans. I realized then what I would need to do to really learn it, but unfortunately it was almost my last lesson. I got sick, missed two weeks of classes, and had to drop it to get back on track in my other classes, and never got it back on schedule.

Not exactly fluently, but better'n I know how to speak — or maybe I should say better'n I thought I knew. Makes me think maybe our brains remember more than we realize and we put up our own barriers to recalling and using it, like potential embarrassment at getting it wrong.

Once in awhile when I talk to my neighbor, Ramón, something'll come out of my mouth in Spanish that I'd forgotten I knew.

My aunt was stationed there when she was in the Army and speaks Japanese to me. She always has, ever since I was a little kid. So, I know some Japanese. The thing is, though, in these dreams, I speak Japanese and speak it fluently. The dreams are always similar, but never exactly the same, except everyone, including me, speaks Japanese.

I love Asian stuff anyhow though. So, it could just be my mind taking me to a nice place in my dreams.

that's very practical. That probably really reinforces your use of the language. That's very cool that you have a way to make yourself use the language every day even when you're alone. :)

that," "now we're getting somewhere," "I don't get it" and so on. It's not exactly exercising much. But I do work on my accent. Sometimes I'll say something over and over again until I like the way it sounds. A small perk from working at home, I guess.

I have frequent dreams where I'm composing classical music, and to me that's like speaking a foreign language. I can't even do some decent blues jams on the guitar even though I took lessons. I try to remember the music when I wake up, but I'm never successful.

But, if I ever lived in France I hope it was a nice life? :)

How did you feel in your dream when you spoke French? Positive, warm, homey? If so, then yes.

I believe we've all had a healthy mix of happy lives, unhappy lives, and boring ones in between.

But to dream them?

granted, I was taking a Spanish class at the same time, but I'm by no means fluent.

I never had those dreams. :(

my boyfriend studied japanese in college and i'd sit with him during his study sessions. i know a few words and that's about it, but i used to dream in japanese. it was weird

And you would have even less exposure to Japanese that I have to French. :wow:

I have always envied people who could speak seveal languages because I never could. I was late learning to write, and stuttered as a kid, so language was never a good subject of mine. I never mastered a second language.
