Our cat food just rose out of the can. Is this bad?

I open a new can of cat food for Axl and Banjo (our little fur babies), and I hear this slight hiss of air, and it looks like the food rose out of the can by a couple of millimeters like it was some kind of souffle. When I stuck the spoon into the food, I heard another slight hiss of air.

I threw the whole can out rather than serve the food to our cats. This has happened only once before.

Question is, have I done the right thing in throwing the rising food out? Is it contaminated with harmful bacteria? Or am I overreacting, and was the food probably safe to eat all along?

1. I think you did the right thing.

I would _never_ feed The Wiley and Excellent Boy Cat Named Ginger any food that became activated by release of a vacuum. I'd complain to the seller, too.

There must be a problem with the factory itself - I think they just started making this food not too long ago, and the cats both love it. It's hard to find a senior formula that both Axl and Banjo really love, and I'd hate to go looking for another brand again.

2. You did good! I was always taught to throw any canned food away that

does that. Why take a chance? You probably should email the company.

4. I may just do that

The cats love it, but I need to be sure that each can is going to leave the distributor ready to eat without me having to play cat food roulette.
