I really like Vampire movies

Just saw the new Underworld, which I thought was entertaining.

maybe he would have been better as Louis and Pitt as Lestat but it's done, anyhow he was good.

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise were going to be the leads. I still am, but, nevertheless, they did an ok job and the movie is worth watching. Tom Cruise surprised me. Brad Pitt didn't. I don't think Brad Pitt is a versatile actor and this role wasn't for him. I think almost anybody else would have been better as Louis and it's too bad Rutger Hauer wasn't a bit younger. He would've been a perfect Lestat. That's how I pictured Lestat when I read the books years before.

Not sure I want to see the movie

Apparently Stephanie Meyer has never even watched a full vampire film. How absurd is that? Explains a lot though.

I can add another vote to Nosferatu, though. Just rewatched that after LTROI and both are remarkable Films (yes, with a capital F).

Yet so much fun to make fun of.

of the last one and i think the movie would have really disappointed her. I ended up seeing with some friends and only 1 out of 6 of us liked it.

And I've taken to watching really awful movies just for the sake of mocking them. It's pretty fun.

Initially I was dead set against the English language remake, but now I'm starting to think it can be done. The novel reads as something much more in a Stephen King or Clive Barker vein, and a few important sub-plots were left out (particularly that of Håkan). If the writers of the English language version go back to the source material rather than copying the Swedish version, and make a good watch-through-your-fingers thriller rather than concentrating on the Oskar-Eli relationship, then I think it could be good. Different, and likely not as brilliant as the Swedish version, but a good, solid horror flick. If they just copy the Swedish version and cast Oskar and Eli as brooding emo kids, it will suck.

so now I have to go see it!!!

I'm dying for it to come out on DVD.

I liked the Interview movie too. The ones I'm really waiting for are the movies based on the Brian Lumley books.

what are the Lumley books?

I've read the first 5 and there's a bunch more. I guess they might be a bit dated now, they were written in the 80's, but I just loved the imagination behind them.

If you like spies, vampires, with a little bit of science fiction thrown in, then you must read these books. The first one is called Necroscope. Don't be fooled by the over the top cover, the books are really good.

list in proper order to read the next set. Lumley is nothing if not prolific. Very very inventive theory of how vampires came to be.

"Near Dark", it's a realy good vampire movie from the 80's.

A weird one is "Vampire's Kiss" with Nicolas Cage. I think it's funny.

Movies, for some reason, really don't do it for me. :shrug:

I'm trying to think of why that is and the only thing I can come up with is that in Rice's books, for instance, a major part of the charm was her writing style. She took her time in setting up a scene and did it in an interesting and entertaining way. I think it's hard to linger on the ambiance of a scene in a film without being boring. The details in a film can't be properly described, they can only be shown.

I'm not very satisfied with what I just wrote but it's the best I can do. Maybe a better example for me to describe is PBS's (I think?) adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles". It was pretty good, I enjoyed it, but it was a shallow soap opera compared to the book. I'm almost completely lacking in the poetry appreciation department, but reading "Tess" was almost like reading poetry I think. He could spend a couple paragraphs describing a snail making its way on a garden wall at dusk in order to set a mood, and it was mesmerizing. There just isn't time for that in a movie. There's the film producer's "Tess" and there's Thomas Hardy's "Tess". Two completely different things.

Vampire lit is pretty much the only horror fiction I really like. Currently reading the totally campy and funny Sookie Stackhouse books, which are the source of 'True Blood' the new HBO series.

none of this romantic, mysterious vampire stuff.. these guys/ladies were there to drink blood and they didn't care if half the victims throat got ripped out in the process. And they weren't pleasant to look at either..

She reminds me a bit of Kate Beckinsale...

That movie is so silly, corny and fun. It actually puts vampires in a positive light. (haha) The other thing that cracks me up is the fact that his parents think he is gay, and they are reading books about it and trying to figure out how to confront him about it. At the end he's says, "Mom, Dad...I'm not gay, I'm a vampire!"

Most vampire movies are too pretentious. I would say I liked Coppola's Dracula, but it has crazy plotlines that have nothing to do with Bram Stoker's Dracula, and he leaves out some of the best parts of the book. I thought Near Dark was pretty cool, but the whole transfusion cure thing really bothered me.

But if I had to choose one it would be "Interview With a Vampire".

Night Stalker because it's hilarious and cool, Shadow because Willem Defoe is even better than normal in it...and he's always great, and Night Watch for the sheer fun and different take on the genre (you'll never look at mosquitoes the same way again).

I also totally dig the Dracula movies with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing by Hammer Films.
