Has anyone else been battling an upper respiratory thing for over a month?
I am not seeking medical advice, just wondering if I am going crazy.

46. Time and sleeping... a lot!
I took a day off last Monday and spent most of that whole weekened in bed, asleep. It really helped considerably, so if you can get a couple of days in a row sleeping twelve hours or so, try it. I was amazed at how well it worked. I still have the cold but the severity of it is gone :D

...especially my back when I get up in the morning...oftentimes I feel better when I turn in...Could it be sciatica overwhelming me and becoming something worse?

9. Sciatica is pretty particularized;
there's this nerve. And I wouldn't call any of that pain 'aches,' its pretty sharp.

15. Exactly, a back spasm.
Lifting and twisting wrong will do it. DON'T PLAY GOLF!!!

Exercises really help; I've got the condition, but rarely have symptoms.

See 'exercises for sciatica sufferers' here:

Good Luck!

41. Unless you happen to be obese, especially in the abdominal area
in which case resting flat on your back can actually make it worse. In that case, resting on your side with a pillow between your knees is the best thing.

5. I and most of my block did it in November-December.
My brother and his family in New Mexico as well. A couple of my neighbors and my brother got antibiotics (he also got a steroid inhaler) but I gutted it out. For me it wasn't horribly nasty, just persistent. Took a long time for that cough and congestion to clear out.

It's like I can't breathe then all of a sudden a couple of really deep breaths happen on their own. It's painful as hell. Then, I go back to just being way too congested. My aunt is going through the same thing with too much congestion, but she's doing more sneezing and not having the catch thing happen.

53. wash all your bedding, soak your toothebrush in rubbing alcohol
there is an over the counter nasal spray "4-Way" that has reduced nasal swelling, I use this now instead of those "Breathe Right" nasal strips, they just literally open your nostrils more. There are prescription-strength antihistamines, I haven't gotten to a doctor yet, maybe it would work for you. Hope you get better, my Mom is also a cancer-survivor & she just came down with it, she's got a horrible 'wet cough' now, & aches & pains.

The only reason my lungs aren't as involved is due to prednisone. I've been taking it to keep the swelling down in my lungs. I have to wear a mask to vacuum or dust. I've even had to sleep with a mask on to cut down on wheezing. My lungs are making a serious attempt to kill me here. x(

30. Raising hand
Started before Christmas as a sneezy coughing basic feel-like-crap cold , went into being a raw painful throat, then upper respiratory, then turned into a sinus and ear infection. Went on Amoxiciilin for 10 days, felt better, except one Eustachian tube remained blocked. The upper respiratory nastiness returned, the sinus infection started up again, the coughing took over again. Went to doc on Thursday. Am now on Zithromax, taking Tessalon Perles for the cough and using saline nose spray to relieve sinus pressure. The Zyth is kicking this thing's infectious ass, the Tessalon works, and the Eustachian tube has finally unblocked.

You are all kinds of crazy in good ways, KW, but not crazy about this stupid virus that wants to hang out for weeks and cause lots of secondary bacterial infections.

Am personally fed up with this being sick for weeks BS. Teaching and having to talk for hours all day hasn't helped. It makes me cough more, and my stomach is not appreciating the cough drops to soothe the throat and temporarily relive the hacking.

Hope you get better soon, KW!

34. Yes, it hurts to talk.
I have a bell that I ring to get their attention, but then they start talking again. Grr! And I'm so grouchy... and sound like a frog. The little ones are probably scared to death of me.

I take a thermos of hot tea, which helps somewhat... except for being so far from the restroom!

You have been through quite a bout of the nasties. Hope you feel better soon, too! :hi: (no hugs, I'm contagious)

43. Teaching teens here (SpEd)
and my 9th grade Geography class is especially noisy and rude. Eight hours of talking sucks. If ringing a bell would help, would use it, but have too many immature teens that would probably steal it. On any given day have 3-5 kids who are in danger of or do get kicked out for bad behavior choices. Several of these kids are already in gangs, and am hoping with the repeated offenses, they will be removed to another school site that deals with the more hard core type kids. In fact, one of them, after several arrests on campus, was expelled this week.

Took one day off when I started the Amoxicillin because of needed quiet and rest for body, throat, head and soul.

Am drinking a lot of water, which helps some.

Sounds like you need more than a weekend of not talking to get better

Hope you can take some time off. I know I always hate to do that because every day off is two or more days of undoing the chaos from a sub teacher being present. Why do subs ignore explicit instructions, including where to put class materials when the day is done so I can pick up where things were left off? That makes me more grouchy than badly behaving kids :grr:

32. Yes! It went away and came back.
I had the head cold from hell for three weeks in December. I pretty much recovered over Christmas break. Then I went back to school and now have a rotten chest cold.

I feel like crap.... I'm cold, ache all over, I can hear myself breathing (seriously!), and I'm coughing up disgusting glop.

Bleah. I know I need an antibiotic. I'm going to call on Monday, even though my family dr. is out of town. I refuse to go to the emergency room and sit there for six hours. This sux.

Sending all fellow sickies healing vibes (but no hugs, too contagious!)

She had pneumonia and it appears that she has bronchitis and an asthmatic lingering thing going.

MG Jr. had it practically all fall in one form or another, and I finally came down with it early in December. MG Jr. ended up with a double ear infection (his first ever) and antibiotics helped him recover, but then he got the sniffles AGAIN after that. I had a sinus infection from the same creeping crud early in December (standard operating procedure for me) and also went on antibiotics, but it didn't kill off an earache. I'm not too fond of my doctor, so I went to Mom's Medical Service--she gave me the antibiotic ear drops her doctor gave her for the same plague. That got rid of the earache after Christmas, and it lasted for a while, but it's back again in one ear. :(

38. I've had the bad chest cold for two weeks
And my spouse for one week.

The frustrating thing is that I'll think it's getting better, then I'll start coughing again. At least I don't wake up twenty times a night coughing anymore, so I guess that is progress.

And I don't know where I caught it because I am retired, and I don't go out that much!

47. When I first caught this thing, in early December,
I also had to sleep sitting up. Luckily, that was only for one night. I was almost over the cold two weeks later when I went to my parents' for Christmas. Both of them had it, too, but I think my father had a strain that was far worse than what I had gotten before. I caught that one from him and got sick all over again.

Luckily, I have found that getting plenty of sleep helps considerably, giving your body a more relaxed body to self-cure :)

I hope you get past the "dyin'" stage

I am now on higher doses of prednisone. And once I am done with the pred I will be doing the advair thing.

Doctor seems to think it is my asthma not getting back under control after the bacterial bronchitis I had.

Looks like I am going to gain more weight because of the roids. Not to mention how bitchy I get. Oh yay.
