That Huge scallop in the back of the guitar is what i can't figure.Never played a strat like that.

6. I'm going to go with the "classic, pre-CBS Strat" responses.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's Strat, from the artwork on the front of his box set "Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble"...

...that's exactly what you're seeing at the 4:50 mark.

7. He's only got two springs on the tremolo

Most people usually play with three springs. With only two springs, the tension isn't as tight, so it's easier to do all that dive-bombey crap with the whammy bar.

10. string guage is a determining factor.

Look at SRV's 5 springs. He used a HEAVY gauge.

Downing's proto-shred and probably wanted the thin tone for this song anyway. Light gauge.

12. I remember reading a Guitar Player article on him around "Screaming for Vengeance" (1982-ish)

IIRC, both him and Glen Tipton played like .008 or .007 guage strings (high E), with ultra-thin picks (faster shredding, of course), so that would make sense.

13. It's really hard to see

You have to rewind it a couple times to see that. If it were me, I would've moved the springs a bit closer in toward the center. Of course, I play a Tele 90% of the time, so my opinion aint' worth jack. ;)

Something's gotta lock on that guitar, otherwise that same lack of tension on the trem block would completely fuck up the intonation after a few dives. I can't really tell, but since it's metal and wanky I'm going to have to go with a Floyd conversion without a visible locking nut (locking keys, maybe?).

The standard Fender tremolo is not really known for its ability to stay in tune, especially when you're doing the shreddy dive-bomby stuff that those metal dudes do. I bet it is a Floyd or Kahler or some such type of locking bridge.

15. It's not a floyd or kahler bridger

it looks stock to me. It may have locking saddles, or locking tuners. .... hard to tell from a youtube video, but it looks rather stock to me. Hendrix only had the normal fender tremelo bridge, and he was able to pull off a lot on that.
