1. I don't get it. I saw him in Batman and he just didn't do anything for me
I mean he wasn't scary (as say Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs) and he wasn't bigger than life (like when Jack Nickolson played him). I though the movie was great, but he was just OK.

2. I see the opposite here
He MADE that movie. It would have been an average violent superhero flick without him.
I think he was very creepy in a Joseph Conrad "Heart of Darkness" kind of way.

3. Nearly everyone sees the opposite. I have heard nothing but raves for his peformance
I plan to watch the movie again, to see if I can figure out what I am missing.

4. my thing is, he loses himself in that role
I don't see Heath Ledger, I see the Joker. It's not just what he says, but all the little tics and mannerisms that he creates to form a complex psychotic character.

6. The difference between Hopkins' Lecter, Nickolson's Joker and Ledger's Joker
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 10:59 AM by sarge43
is Lecter and Nick's Joker had limits. Starling: He won't come after me. He'd consider that rude.
Ledger's Joker would stop at absolutely nothing; he was totally amoral and that made him terrifying. Yes, this is in part writing, but an actor has to have the skill to make the writing live and ring true.

No, Ledger's Joker wasn't bigger than life; he was the antithesis of life, utter nihilism.

5. He was the best part of that movie
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 10:40 AM by Mad_Dem_X
I'm not a fan of comic-book movies; I saw TDK because I'm a fan of Mr. Ledger's. He blew me away with his performance. I'm so glad he's getting recognition for this, since he was practically ignored for his role in Brokeback Mountain. He was a fantastic actor and deserves all the awards he receives, IMO. It just sucks that he's not around to accept the accolades in person. :(

7. I'm a little bothered by this
The movie was good but not great. Heath did an amazing part but Oscar-worthy? Would he even be in the consideration for all these awards if he was still alive? I know that's morbid to ask but it's the truth. He has serious competition with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and my personal favorite Josh Broslin. You want to see creepy, Josh has this strange knack of doing creepiness to a new level with his role as George Bush and his Oscar nominated part of Dan White in the movie "Milk".

And Robert Downey Jr. was amazing in Tropic Thunder. You wouldn't think a part in a comedy would be considered Oscar Worthy (and seriously, Tom Cruise was equally as deserving for a nomination from that movie) but Downey did an amazing turn as an actor who plays an Australian playing a black man (or as Downey would say "I'm just a dude, being the dude playing the dude"). A lesser actor would have made this part look stupid and offensive

8. I think he would have been nominated
I remember the buzz starting long before he died. I haven't seen Doubt or Milk yet, so I can't say who deserves the Oscar more. I do agree that Downey Jr. was amazing in Tropic Thunder, but his character doesn't stay with you after the movie ends. You can't help but try to analyze Ledger's Joker long after it ends.
