Why is it that if you do something nice you're out to get something?
Our company recently held a contest to find ways to save money. I submitted 2 ideas that were liked by the judging committee. I won 2-$100 gift cards to use anywhere within the company.

The girlfriend of my co-worker just lost her job due to cutbacks in staffing. Another co-worker married a woman from another country and they are having problems getting her home with him due to legal red tape.

I gave both of these people one of my cards.

Her so her boyfriend could take her to a few movies or maybe a nice dinner to lift her spirits.
Him so he could treat his wife to a hotel stay when she was finally able to come to live with him.

Both of them thanked me for thinking of them. Then one of them told someone else what I had done. That person came to me and asked me what I was up to. I said nothing. He said "BS, no one gives away stuff like that unless they're looking for something."

Do we all have to be that shallow?

1. Is the smart-ass co-worker a Republican?
They don't believe that actual generosity exists, because on the sad little boat that is their existence, it's truly every man for himself. THEY don't help others without expecting something in return; therefore, they cannot comprehend why OTHER people would do so.

Typical Randian mindset. It's sad.

3. You are a wonderful person -- ignore the asshole who made the comment.
You did a good thing...don't let him spoil it.

4. the people who think that way
are the ones you would never do anything nice w/o expecting something back, or w/o having an agenda.

There are, of course, people in this world who do nice things because it's the nice thing to do. You are evidence of this.

Thank goodness for people like you!

6. We're not all shallow, but greedy people are.
As everyone else has said, he simply does not understand these basic principles of compassion and generosity. They are foreign and alien concepts. He probably tells homeless people to "Get a job!" (The Freeper that used to work here was the epitome of the greedhead and never once took any of us out to lunch, but was always the first in line to accept our generosity.)

So, ignore him and just bask in the feeling you really helped some other folks in a time when they needed some compassion from another

7. What the hell were you up to? Now you've got me curious about your secret agenda
Quit being so damn coy. What the hell are you after here, Bowden? My guess is you're running the ol' sympathy maneuver so you can line up some tail. My hat's off to ya, bro; Chicks totally fall for that "caring" routine.

9. Pay no attention to that person. You did a nice thing and your generosity
made several people feel good (including yourself). Don't let one skeptic ruin it for you.
