A man dressed in a nice suit tells me he lost his wallet and needs money to pay for his trip back home. I gave him $5. Was I a fool? Do you give money to people who ask for it? On the street? To street people? I used to but now am kinda low on funds and don't bother to dig out my purse every time somebody asks.

1. Nope. You weren't a fool. Here's why.
You have no idea whether or not he was 'playing' you, so you did the compassionate thing.

I, personally, think you did great.

2. I'd have done the same thing...
I've been known to give my last $5 to a stranger, because I never know when someone else's circumstances are worse than mine.

3. If I have my wallet out or change in my hand I don't mind giving money to someone who will
obviously just drink it away. I'm an alcoholic so I know how much they'll appreciate it.

5. then it's no problem
I never believe these "have to get home" stories. Are there no more phones? Over Christmas, I was waiting on a train platform for about an hour waiting for my brother, who was late (bad roads) to pick me up. I asked someone if I could use his cell phone, and he let me. I offered to pay, but he refused - good guy. What I didn't do was tell him that I needed to get home, and then ask for money.
