2. My House is Worth What?
The home as investment vehicle.
The shame of having a graniteless kitchen!
The shame of having stainlessless appliances.
It's all about the MONEY!!!

5. and the dramatic pause...before they get told what the house is worth
it's stupid and annoying.

I find ALL of the HGTV shows are annoying in the granite countertop/stainless steel appliance area.

In addition, I see these people on House Hunters and Property Virgins looking at nice places and being complete jerks "oh, this is terrible!" Half the time because there isn't granite or stainless :eyes:

Those people would just :puke: if they saw the kind of places we're looking at (we're considering buying a house, if we can afford it - and we have a TINY budget) we're also not averse to a lot of work. The first place we looked at was entirely moldy and had asbestos siding - we'll NOT be considering that one - it just needs to be bulldozed. The second, though, has potential. We say that despite the fact that we walked in, and it smelled of cat pee, all the flooring needs to be replaced - the whole place virtually needs to be gutted. Makes those idiots complaining about not having granite seem like complete asses to me.

9. I'm with you there
We've owned three houses--all of them "rescues". They weren't falling-down awful, but pretty darn close. Our family and friends couldn't understand why we'd buy houses like that--heck, even our real estate agents couldn't--but like you said, we saw the potential. After we fixed them up (modestly and practically, and NEVER with granite countertops and stainless steel applicances), everyone was impressed. And we've always sold them for tens of thousands more than what we paid.

16. You sound like the type of buyer I'm courting!
I'm selling an older house "as is." No built-in appliances. No granite countertops. Hell, no countertops at all! But a house with great bones, hardwood floors, and solid potential, full of light, and on a large, park-like site in a family-friendly 'hood.

And the way the house is situated, it would appeal to green-oriented buyers -- there's the possibility of solar and geothermal energy options.

I'm sincerely hoping HGTV hasn't brainwashed people to run out screaming at the sight of (horror of horrors!) "old" plumbing fixtures. :banghead:

:P

My poor Dad's house has aluminum wiring. That stuff makes PVC plumbing look like the greatest idea in the history of construction.

4. li blame this channel in part for the economic problems of this nation
they are constantly talking about flipping homes. buy home, spend mucho dollars making it nice, sell for a profit. the problem is, that many who do it go into debt on the project, have no flipping idea what they are doing, and go bankrupt on the deal.

8. "My House Is Worth What?" but an honorable mention to "Property Virgins"
for the most obnoxious name among a tellar list of obnoxious names and programs.

there was a time they had good programming; great how-to and decorating shows for the average Joe and Josie.

Seems such a long time ago...

11. I'm going to give a shout-out to Hidden Potential here
If you can afford a $200K house, and you find a shack for 150K, does that mean you have 50K hanging around to gut the place and move everything around inside? NO!

Why not just get a house for 200K or less that needs *only* a coat of paint, new appliances, new flooring, and maybe some tile work and DEAL WITH IT until you can afford to fix those things.

13. Pretty much every Dream Home
The last thing I would ever want is to win one since they are generally overvalued and a bitch to sell even when the market was strong.

17. I've only heard about the home give-aways they do.
Is that part of the "Dream Home"?

I remember my mother encouraging me to enter their sweepstakes for the house they built in Tyler, Texas. My first thought was: Are they paying the property taxes, too? Nope! And upon further reading of the nine they've given away, seven have had to sell the home because of the tax burden. Why do they keep building all these McMansions? Build a truly LEEDS-certified green home, less than 2000 sq.ft. and sensible to live in. I guess, though, by the sounds of the types they're marketing to, that would be considered a garage apartment and not a true "home".

21. A teacher I worked with won that Dream House contest on HGTV
It was a gorgeous house on the coast of Maine. It was neat the way they handled the prize. They came to school and surprised her. It was a big party. She also won a car and they parked it in front of the school with a big ribbon on it. The kids made commercials for HGTV that played for awhile on the air and that was fun.

But she went there for one week's vacation and then put it on the market. The property taxes were 3 or 4 times her yearly salary.

22. Oh sure, any kind of prize-winning is going to be done like that.
I'm glad she had a positive overall outcome to it and was intelligent enough to understand about not living above her means. I think HGTV promotes that way of living.

I still would like to see them give away a truly green and small house. I suspect the people they market to would not accept that kind of thing. I grew up in a house that had, at best, 2200 sq.ft. and we were quite happy with it for a family of six :D

the few times that I've seen it, these virgins, because of their lack of experience, are so stupid and making such bad decisions that its positively painful to watch.

They deserve to fail.

15. I used to watch HGTV all the time
back when there was still some "G" in "Home and Garden Television". It's nearly impossible to find any shows about Gardening. It's all about how to stage your house for sale. For those of us not selling our houses...there's not much substance to the channel anymore.

only I would say it's the g-word "greed". they should just go ahead and be totally honest and rename their channel the "House and Greed Television Channel" ;)
