I took this in London the day before the Phillies won the World Series. I was very lonely for home but excited about the Series.



I fly back to the UK on Saturday. My visa finally came through!

What a sad, lovely post.

I really wanted to see her this time, and do some more pics. Get caught up.

The ice storm messed up our plans, we talked for a short while, and set it up for pictures today. She didn't call or come by.

Unfortunately, we are on two opposite sides of a well fortified moat (you might even call it a WatchTower) built by the religion we were both members of at one time, and she is a member still. I think fear got the better of her, I think she's probably not going to call back. I don't think I'll ever get to see her again.


We both got to say "I love you".

What are you going (back) to the UK for? How long is your visa for? I've got another 1 1/2 years, but I'm already scheming about ways to stay. I feel like I have a far more promising future here than I would back in the US.

He's a British citizen, so I have a spousal visa. It's good for 2 years, and I can renew it after that and it will be permanent.

How long have you been there? Where do you live? How long did it take you to acclimate? What took you to the UK?

There goes my dream of getting married and instantly being a UK citizen. Will you ever become a citizen, or is it a matter of choice where having a permanent visa is just as good for most things?

I've been here since October 2007 - I live in Yorkshire. I came here to get a PhD, which I'm still working on. My visa runs out when my funding for/from the university is up, whether I've finished or not, so I'm feeling kind of rushed. I think it took me a few months to acclimate, but now I'm used to most things about it.... there are a few little things that I miss about the US, but on a whole, I find life here to be more enjoyable in a day-to-day way. Maybe my judgement is just clouded because I'm being paid to work on what I love and would do for free anyway.... who knows. Maybe Liz will break up with her boyfriend, fall madly in love with me, we'll get married, and I'll be here for the rest of my life. In a decade then I'll be able to say how much I like it.

What took you here? Did you and hubby meet in the US, UK, or somewhere else?

I've been in the States for 3 months to get this visa! Thank goodness I had a place to stay (for free) and a couple of grand to pay for the visa. I don't know how other people do it.

No, I will never become a UK citizen, for several reasons. 1. You have to give up your US passport, which if you've done much world traveling, you know is worth its weight in gold in some circumstances. 2. You give up your US citizenship, which means I wouldn't be able to vote. and 3. We have no plans to stay there permanently. I don't like it at all yet, which doesn't help. I'm hoping I adjust.

My husband and I met in the States and came to the UK because his company in Philadelphia offered him the director position in their London office (easier for them to put a Brit in the position so they didn't have to pay for a visa). It was a good way to get us over there, because his company payed for the move. My husband owns property in France, so there's a good chance we'll end up there at some point.

I love France. However, if you were going to move there, isn't that when being a UK citizen would be advantageous? Will the visa you'll eventually going to get cover you for anywhere in the EU, or just the UK? For instance, I'm in the UK on this visa and can stay for a few years, but it doesn't allow me to just move off to another EU country if I wanted to - which sucks.

For France, for example, just by virtue of being my husband's wife (who in addition to being an EU citizen because he is from the UK, is also a resident of France because he owns property there) I am allowed to go there and have all the benefits of a citizen. It's different for each European country though. Regardless, I wouldn't give up my US citizenship. I was born an American and that's what I shall stay. :) We'll work around it depending on where we move.

And now I am logging off and the next time I type on this Macbook I will be in London! :D
