Bad News~Have lost my job

Just told about an hour ago.

Am not going to be rehired because I'm "not a good fit." Principal wouldn't elaborate beyond saying I needed to read the two standards he thinks I should work on, one of which is about arranging my classroom to suit my SpEd students. He knows I don;t have a classroom. Am a floating teacher, and have no say so in the room arrangement and other things needed to go in a classroom particular to the classes I teach.

If it were about just the $1.5 budget cuts in our district, he should have said so.

Meanwhile, am already cutting out things in my life, services I use for my home, so I can start saving to make another move, probably back to Tucson. California is too expensive to live in, and it took the last three years just to be able to get a teaching job here in this little ag area of CA.

I will no longer be able to afford living near my grandchildren :cr:

Am just home for lunch, but wanted to post this.
Am upset.
Am trying to not let my ego be affected by this, and it won't after a while.

Have to begin a new plan A.

I'm really sorry you had to go through this but I feel your attitude is extremely admirable, and many people in "different but similar" situations could learn from your response to the situation.

It is easier said than done, but when you're on the horse, and you get thrown, the best plan is to get back up on the horse as soon as possible. You've got plenty of support here from people working on their own "Plan A," so all the best to you and I hope you find yourself in a new, rewarding situation very soon.

I used to live in Tucson. It's a beautiful city. I loved it there but my husband's job took us to the Phoenix area 8 years ago. I love it here too. I'm doing my part to make AZ blue!

Am just gluing to lay it out.

Principal could have said "budget cuts", that is a valid statement.

But, he chose to say, "You don't fit in."
I asked, "What do you mean?"

Reply: "You're not a good fit, but you should look at the two teacher standards you could work on in the future,"
(very evasive...no eye contact thought this whole exchange)

The two standards:

1. arrange classroom to benefit you students

I don't have a classroom.
Am a floating SpEd, in that I share two classrooms with two teachers, and have limited space, let alone any say so in arrangement or class design, especially when their classrooms are set up for SpEd specifically designed programs.

2. Make a plan for those difficult students to create positive options
Have had two students that behaved so aggressively have had school security in to stop the violence. and, Have three students that are on the verge of being expelled because of disruption that affects all students, (one just yesterday concealing a weapon), and more, and have done all I can to keep them in and gain their cooperation in the classroom, sitting with them, working with them, and still have had to eventually exercise my lawful right to have them leave the classroom because of threatening behaviors toward me or other students (these few still throw things at or deliberately provoke those SpEd kids who are mentally challenged.)


Will update after I meet with my rep.

Seems this first year principal has an other agenda, simply seen with is "don't fit in " statement.

Am teaching, so my contract is through end of July, but teaching pay ain't much...

Am not fired until I finish my time through end of May, and then they still have to pay tr=hrough end of contract in July.

Nonetheless, will have to gather now all funds available to make the adjustment and changes coming my way.

I know how hard you worked at your position. That principal was a coward and a liar (like most I have known over the decades).
He had no right to attack your skills. Instead, if there was a problem, he should been willing to help you to improve. What a typical jerkass administrator who has forgotten that he ever taught a class.

My opinion? If you don't have tenure, they let you go before they had to grant it to you. It's the new cost-cutting measure. Of course they lie about it. That is what they do. May he never have another night's sleep. And may he be the next to get canned!

I wish you better luck in AZ. I know it's hard to pick yourself up and start over, but you can do it. Keep us posted, OK?

If you move back to Tucson, are you already certified there? I know how frustrating it is to go through all of the testing to get certified in another state - I'm doing that now in Maine. Let us know how it goes with your union rep.

have a friend there in education, and she says they are always using emergency certification with a one year waiver for SpEd.

But, sometimes I think just getting into something else, like using my Interior Design degree.

He needs to be MADE to:

1. Define his terms;

2. Document his INTERIM recommendations/warnings to you, complete with time-lines, goals, evaluation methods;

3. Show that any termination decision is NOT based on budget.

ANY further dealings with this administrator MUST include a Union Rep. ANY. Do NOT be suckered into a "Can you come into my office for a sec?" request!!

If I had known that this was going to be the termination that will take place at the end of the school year meeting, would have had her there yesterday when I met with him.

I was given no warnings.

Am setting up a meeting with my union rep, who is also fortunately is a counselor at my school.
