1. Because most kids would smell that Jack Daniels and think, "No way!"

6. My parents love telling about once
when my brother was 2 or 3 and drank some Vodka my father left on the counter like it was water.

He's a Jack Daniels fan now so I can only imagine what he would've done if that had been left out ;-).

4. So the drunks can get the liquor open
If they put child safe tops on, sales would drop.

11. Because no sicko ever tampered with liquor and killed people.
I believe that is the serious answer.

The fun answer is: You don't want kids to mix drinking with pills at that age. They don't know which ones will make them rue the day for taking it with alcohol and which ones will just enhance the effects of alcohol.

12. Uhm.

Guessing here... because pills come in pretty colors, look like candy and are easy to pop in the mouth, whereas tots probably aren't going to have the strength or the dexterity to either swig from a liquor bottle or to pour themselves a drink, and even if they do, they will probably decline due to the smell and taste of alcohol.

But you raise a valid point. I'm sure there will be a products liability lawsuit with that issue in the near future, if there hasn't been one (or more) already. And the work-around (safety cap) is easy and cheap. The alcohol lobby will fight it tooth and nail though because "the risk isn't great enough to justify the added cost of producing safety caps" (read: it will make it harder for some people to drink = lost revenue).

Good question though.

22. Been there, done that TWICE.

Child proof caps had nothing on 3 and 4 year old me. My grandfather's Haldol (sp?) looked like Red Hots and the cough syrup I was given tasted too yummy. I ate his whole bottle of pills and drank the whole bottle of cough syrup. I had to get my stomach pumped twice as a kid. Never did get into the liquor and it was more easily accessible if you will. I could climb the highest of cabinets and break through any child proof lock. I was the Houdini kid.

13. easy answer:
kid proof = drunk proof. You do not want drunks getting into meds, but they NEED to get into more booze.

27. Shhhhh! Don't give our Lt. Gov. (R) any ideas!
I was actually at the Legislature last year when Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona (R-Much, Much Worse Than Lingle) testified in favor of a measure that a) would make serving a minor carry jail time, and b) would leave you liable to such a charge if your 15-year-old snuck a beer out of your fridge (because you're supposed to keep it locked up, like everyone else does  ). :scared:

I hate those things - they don't have those in the bottles I get at the duty free or across the border. (not to mention full liter bottles vs chintzy 750 ml here)
