I am under a Tornado Warning. Ask Me Anything!
My family/friends:

My best friends all live far away, so they're safe.

My brother is in Seattle -- he's perfectly safe.

My little sister is too dumb to come in out of the rain -- she's trying to drive home in it.

My parents have a "panic room" in their house, where they are holed up.

I am in the closet of my apartment with my Airport connection, listening to the sirens and the radio simulcast of one of the local TV stations.

2. Thanks.
So far, so good. The sirens are loud but rather comforting after the first hour. LOL.

6. I am not sure but ZIM refers to them...
and AlienGirl gave them to me, so now I have them.

I think they make you sing things like "WE LIKE THE MOON!" and let you laugh for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours...

What were we talking about?

7. Dan is a first-class dickhead.
He's a HARDCORE freeper, too.

Ever since he started issuing his own watches, warnings, and all-clears, his word is worth less than Dubya's to me.

I'll check with someone besides Dan first.

19. I can't STAND to watch his sanctimonious ass! I was guessing
you probably felt the same way.

We weathered another one here in the Southern version of Tornado Alley. Life on the edge of the jet stream.

21. I worked in a school for awhile.
There are EXTREMELY strict rules in schools about what you have to do with the kids when there's a watch or a warning. When he started issuing his own, we couldn't act swiftly -- we had to check and make sure it was a REAL watch, warning, or all-clear, not a "Dan's Ego Trip" watch, warning, or all-clear.

He could have EASILY been responsible for a delay that got someone hurt. :grr:

We went through our first warning just yesterday, when you Texans sent the bad weather our way. Hang on, my hopes are that it is to early for a real rock and roller.

Guess cause only the Texans and the Okies get blown around in March. LOL Forgot about you Bamas.

16. Yeah....
I have buried three family members (not close ones, like third cousins or something), two neighbors, and one friend due to tornadoes. The tornadoes were all in March or April except for one in November (the two neighbors).

15. I lived on the third floor of one of the on-campus apartments for years.
Being an Alabamian, I knew what to do in a tornado by the time I was 4.

The foreign exchange students across the hall, however, were shitting their pants when we got our first tornado warning the first year I lived there. It seems they don't have tornadoes in India.

17. Alabama
Any kid in Alabama learns his counties by listening to the National Weather Service announce the counties under a warning. I know I did at my granny's as a kid.

:D When I took Alabama History in high school, I found that we all had mental associations with the county names. We finally figured out that it was from years of tornado warnings -- we associated good feelings with counties far enough away that if we heard their warning, WE were in no danger, and feelings of tension with the bordering counties -- the ones where, if they were getting hit, we were next. Our teacher was amazed when I figured it out. Sounded reasonable to me.

20. We rode through town after the big one in the 70's
With my parents, I was little. We had known nothing about the bad weather. didn't have the tv or radio on, and it was sunny at our precise address. We couldn't believe it. Didn't know what had happened. Looked like a war zone.

The killer storms of November 1989 killed two neighbors of ours. Great people. They died together -- the cops found them under the rubble, holding hands.

If she drives slowly, she should be okay. I haven't seen 53 flooded south of Ardmore...

If she's going through Ardmore, tell her to forget it.

Once again, glad you are OK.

Your posting on DU during a tornado situation ran head long into my over-a-year-long contempt for the most annoying catch-phrase in the Lounge of all time. I really can't go into describing the visceral loathing it stirs within me. :-)

Now then, are you safe? I would be FAR AWAY from a freakin' computer in your situation. So be safe, or else!

The warning has expired. There are high winds and torrential rain, but nothing that's going to take the building down.

I have a laptop and, because I have the good sense to be a Mac girl, an Airport connection. Wi-Fi, baby!! Broadband from the closet, curled up on four pillows with my teddy bear and a blanket and some bottled water, yeah!!! 21st century disaster preparation!! :D

I've worked as a Red Cross volunteer after tornados here in the midwest and they are not anything to take lightly.

I lost a friend in the Sanford/Orlando tornado four years ago. He was my former College Economics Prof.

Sorry to go biographical on you.......I'm just glad you and yours are safe.

39. I've said a prayer for you!
I have a wind/tornado phobia but it's not as bad as it used to be. I live in Indiana and we have many. For years in my 20s until now, I have nightmares about tornadoes of all kinds. In a good dream, I can pray in the dream and face it head on and it usually dissapates. If not, it comes closer and closer until I wake up in a fright! Sometimes they go right by me and I just watch them. It's amazing what my mind does with the tornadoes. It's almost like I'm obsessed with them at the same time I'm frightened of them.

I'm almost always in a house. I get panicky if the wind kicks ups in the night during a bad storm--or in the day when the clouds look ominous and the wind is always wild at the front of the storm. The closest I've come to being in a tornado was when a funnel cloud float right over our house slowly but it never touched down. Whew! We sat on our front step watching it until it passed.

I always attribute my fear of wind/tornadoes to either this terrible Palm Sunday tornado time when I was very little, or to watching Wizard of Oz when I was little??? I can't figure out the fascination!

The only thing (besides a cigarette) I can do to calm myself is to pray. I always remember the story where Jesus was with all the fishermen in the boat and there was a huge storm on the sea. All the disciples were afraid and Jesus said something about they had "little faith" and told the storm to "be still" and it stopped immediately. I kid you not, I've prayed that story and it virtually has happened (stopped) several different times after I prayed about that. I have a few other scriptures I refer to and it helps me most of the time. I can't help it and everyone laughs at me but that's how I get!!! Geesh! I wish I wouldn't!Anyway, I always end up after it stops, to pray for others that might be in the path and to calm them like I've been calmed. I always feel like I'm trying to forward the prayer for someone else. So, that's what I 've done for you!!
