1. love them or hate them R.E.M. put "college music" on the map
and opened up the doors for a great deal of athens/atlanta bands. The time period they were taking hold is seminal to the success of a lot of later bands.

Love their harmonies and perhaps their songs are more atmospheric

REM are in another category - totally different styles
