Who can tell me about a GOOD portable MP3 player?
I bought a Creative Tech Nomad NuVO 256MB player, but I'm returning it because it stores files in reverse numerical order  , and because it only actually stores 175MBs, not all 256.

So, who can suggest a good player which will not suck.

My criteria: small, USB compatible, have an armband/beltclip, and maybe able to play WMA files.

1. I am most happy with my Diva player.
I got the 32MB model which uses CF cards (like a 1 or 2 GB capacity). I think the sound quality is good, it is small and although the belt clip is pretty crappy it fits nicely in a pocket. It only plays mp3 files but shows up as a usb device and has none of that DRM crap. I really like the fact most of my storage is on CF and therefor portable.

It is tough however to get your hands on a low internal memory model these days. mydivaplayer doesn't seem to show any in stock or even being made. I bought mine some time ago after a lot of research and it was as cheap or (much) cheaper than any other quality player, many of whom had some form of DRM or relied on internal/proprietary memory.

If you can find a model in your price range, you might want to consider it. Of course, what constitutes good sound quality is a matter of opinion, and I use different headphones, because I can't stand earbuds.

4. Yeah, iPod would be sweet, but I'm trying to stay under $250.
iPods start at, like, $400 in Canada.

Plus, I want a player I can wear while running, and the iPod uses a rotating drive, which might not stand up to the punishment the way a non-moving memory source would.

5. I like CD-players that can read CD-R/RW discs
I spent about $40 to get a quality portable CD-player that can read CD-R/RW discs, and play both MP3 and WMA (Windows Media) files. You don't get the storage space of a $200 MP3 player, but still, you can load up a blank CD with about 700 MBs of songs. And if you use standard compression that's several hours worth of music.

7. That's okay. "Discman" style units are not what I want.
I want a tiny player with no moveable parts. Something which can be worj in an armband while running.

8. hmm are you using 128 kb?
Edited on Sat Mar-06-04 04:45 PM by Kamika
I have 96 mb.. that's about 80 songs.

My players speakers can't reproduce the quality of sound a 128 kbit file has, so it reduces all files to 48 kb..

I doubt an iPOD will show any real difference between a 128 kbit and a lesser quality.

Oh and my player has no movable parts

9. I bought an iAudio MP3 player with 256 MB of memory
and I LOVE it! Also comes with FM radio and a voice recorder.

It's an iAudio CW200, and was about $180.

I did a bunch of looking around before buying it, and it seemed to be what fit my bill the most (really small, 256MB, and voice recorder), and it really has. I real lifesaver on the subway. Now I don't have to listen to idiot's salsa and rap music from their overloud walkmans. Except sometimes, when the idiots are REALLY playing their music loud.

The software that comes with it was easy to install and easy to use, and the software can also rip CDs into mp3, though I've never used it for that, since I have other software.

It's great!

14. I'm not going with another "Nomad" unit.
their software orders files in reverse numerical order if the track number follows an alphabetical listing.

I'll be damned if I'm going to rename 30,000+ files to accommodate one application's weird filing system.

15. I like my Rio..
Not great on the tuner end, but the mp3 player is nice.

Thing is mine is an older model that's been discontinued, but I love that I can bump up the memory by getting a bigger card. I am sure they must still have something similar.
