US Airways flight 1549 was about 4.5 (nautical) miles away from La Guardia at 3200' elevation. LGA is at 21' elevation so the flight had roughly 3200' to work with. I'm pretty sure the Airbus A320 glide ratio is at least 10 to 1 (and probably a good bit more), which means even with no power at all the aircraft should be able to glide at least 32,000' which is about 5.25 nautical miles. So theoretically the flight could have made LGA.

So here's the theoretical question. If John Wayne would have been Sully's 1st officer and slapped the piss out of him, could he have made LGA?

Reference the movie, The High and the Mighty, for more information.
