7. In State College PA, 867- is one of the existing prefixes for area code 814
I had a friend whose roommates picked the dreaded number, and they wound up getting four or five calls for Jenny every day.

Apparently the joke never gets old.

9. Twelve years ago when I worked for a wireless broker, 867 was an AT&T cell prefix.
That was in Minneapolis. I think "Jenny's" number was an inactive number.

20. Wait. The way I've heard this story told by PSU students is that 867 is one of the University's...
exchanges and that 867-5309 is some professor's office number.

23. I'm not sure of the breakdown, but most on-campus numbers are 862, 863, or 865

I think that 862 is for dorms, and the others are for staff and faculty.

I lived off-campus the entire time I was in State College, and I had an 867 number for several years.

That ended in 1999, so it's possible that it's changed since then, but I just checked on a few old Profs, and their numbers are still 863 or 865, and the few staffers I know are 865 as well.

I was 21 and living alone in a really crappy part of Austin's south side. I knew about five people in town, and I didn't go to bars.

One night around 11:00 I got a call from someone in a noisy place. He sounded like a middle aged guy, and he chuckled a lot. He told me that he'd gotten my number and my name off of a wall at a certain bar, and I was recommended as a "great time." He underscored "great" and then chuckled again.

I was more than a little freaked out, though the guy ended the call very politely when I declined to meet him.


I never found out who recommended me, and I never went to the bar to verify it.
