songs about rain
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 09:42 AM by hiphopnation
what's your favorite? Mine "Rain" by Marvin Gaye. I thought I'd heard all of the best ones, The Beatles "Rain", Madonna "Rain"...Marvin's takes the cake. By far, the best, IMHO.

You?

48. I love Ted Kennedy. I do. He's a hero of mine since nearly forever
but. BUT.

I watched him once on film sing to kindergarteners his version of "Itsy Bitsy Spider."

My I only please say that Senator Kennedy is a great Senator but his singing skills fall uh, quite a bit short.

- - -

"Itsy Bitsy Spider" is a perfect call.

5. Who'll Stop The Rain,
Credence Clearwater Revival. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIPan-rEQJA

Long as I remember the rain been comin down.
Clouds of mystry pourin confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, tryin to find the sun;
And I wonder, still I wonder, wholl stop the rain.

I went down virginia, seekin shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals, wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder, still I wonder wholl stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin, how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together, tryin to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin, fallin on my ears.
And I wonder, still I wonder wholl stop the rain.

9. "Songs About Rain" by Gary Allan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rULQNIEX_6k

Well this town has closed down way too early,
And there's nothin' to do
So I'm drivin' around in circles,
And I'm thinkin' about you
Today I heard you got a new last name,
Sure didn't know it was gonna hit me this way
And the radio just keeps on playin'
All these songs about rain

(Rainy Night in Georgia, Kentucky Rain)

Now there's all kinds of songs about babies
And love that goes right
But for some unknown reason nobody
Wants to play them tonight
Hey I hope it's sunny wherever you are
That's sure not the picture tonight in my car
And it sure ain't easin' my pain, all these songs, like

Rainy Night in Georgia, Kentucky Rain,
Here Comes that Rainy Day Feeling again,
Blue Eyes Crying in the early morning Rain,
They go on and on, and there's no two the same
Oh, it would be easy to blame
All these songs about rain

Well I thought I was over you,
But I guess maybe I'm not
'Cause when I let you go, looks like lonely
Is all that I got
Guess I'll never know what could have been
Sure ain't helpin' this mood that I'm in
If they're gonna keep on playin' these songs, like

Rainy Night in Georgia, Kentucky Rain,
Here Comes that Rainy Day Feeling again,
Blue Eyes Crying in the early morning Rain,
They go on and on, and there's no two the same
Oh, how I wish I could blame
All these songs about rain

(Rainy Night in Georgia, Kentucky Rain,
Here Comes that Rainy Day Feeling again)
All these songs about rain
(Blue Eyes Crying in the early morning Rain,
They go on and on, and there's no two the same)

16. When the Rain Rain Rain Came Down
From Winnie the Pooh.
Best EVER!

The rain rain rain came down down down
In rushing, rising riv'lets,
'Til the river crept out of it's bed
And crept right into Piglet's!
Poor Piglet, he was frightened,
With quite a rightful fright.
And so, in desperation
A message he did write.
He placed it in a bottle
And it floated out of sight.

And the rain rain rain came down down down
So Piglet started bailing.
He was unaware, atop his chair,
While bailing he was sailing!

And the rain rain rain came down down down
And the flood rose up up upper.
Pooh, too, was caught and so he thought,
"I must rescue my supper!"
Ten honey pots he rescued,
Enough to see him through,
But as he sopped up his supper,
The river sopped up Pooh!
And the water twirled and tossed him
In a honey pot canoe!
The rain rain rain came down down down.

49. You folks have the rain genre down pat and polished. Some great songs
on this thread.

To repeat a couple and add some new ones:

"Kentucky Rain," the Presley recording of the Milsap song, is Elvis' best recording, IMO. I love the sound they get out of that studio for that one.

Jim Croce's "Alabama Rain" is a very singable melody.

"And It's a Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," by that guy from Minnesota.

Stan Rogers' "White Squall," if we're talkin' rain & wind on the Great Lakes. Plenty of both in this one.

"Beautiful in the Rain," a Petula Clark recording, will wrap you in velvet chains and leave you for dead.

When the protagonist's plane touches down in the first stanza of Marc Cohn's "Walkin' In Memphis," a pouring rain coats the runway. History is stirred. Insights ensue.

I love this thread, folks.

51. Remember when it rained
can't find a youtube

Remember When It Rained"

Wash away the thoughts inside
That keep my mind away from you.
No more love and no more pride
And thoughts are all I have to do.

Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
Felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
In the darkness I remain.

Tears of hope run down my skin.
Tears for you that will not dry.
They magnify the one within
And let the outside slowly die.

Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
In the water I remain
Running down
Running down
Running down
Running down
Running down
Running down
Running down

82. Yes, I know ...
(Unfortunately), I am old enough to remember the original being a hit.

I found this Fogelberg version by sheer serendipity while looking for something else about a year ago. I just LOVE this version - he's taken a pop classic and turned it into a very soulful, bluesey ballad.

85. "Old enough to remember the original" --yeah, me too; guess we're about the same age
freaks me out big time to realize how old I am, but ya gotta admit, we sure did have some great stuff on the radio accompanying our growing up years, even the one hit wonders ( or two in the case of the Cascades, with The Last Leaf)...And Fogelberg really did do a masterful job of taking an already beautiful song and going even one step further with it. Have a bluesey, soulful day, from a big fan of your writings ( like pretty much everyone else here, I suspect), abq e streeter

88. I turned the Big 60 two weeks ago ...
... still keep thinking I'm talking about someone else when I mention that number.

Thank you so much for your kind words re my scribblings - it still amazes me that anyone on earth would be interested in anything I have to say.

The last line refers to rain.

He's the environmental minister in Australia now. I'm sure industry was real thrilled about that one.

71. Songs about rain -- Gary Allen
Not a favorite but I love rain and I love songs about rain. Heard it on a country station quite a few years ago and it made me feel sad.

72. Blue Motel Room, Joni Mitchell
I like it special because I lived in Savannah for years.

I’ve got a blue motel room
With a blue bedspread
I’ve got the blues inside and outside my head
Will you still love me
When I call you up when I’m down
Here in savannah it’s pouring rain
Palm trees in the porch light like slick black cellophane
Will you still love me
When I call you up when I get back to town
I know that you’ve got all those pretty girls coming on
Hanging on your boom-boom-pachyderm
Will you tell those girls that you’ve got german measles
Honey, tell them you’ve got germs
I hope you’ll be thinking of me
Because I’ll be thinking of you
While I’m traveling home alone
Tell those girls that you’ve got joni
She’s coming back home

I’ve got road maps
From two dozen states
I’ve got coast to coast just to contemplate
Will you still love me
When I get back to town
It’s funny how these old feelings hang around
You think they’re gone
No, no
They just go underground
Will you still love me
When I get back to l.a. town
You and me, we’re like america and russia
We’re always keeping score
We’re always balancing the power
And that can get to be a cold cold war
We’re going to have to hold ourselves a peace talk
In some neutral cafe
You lay down your sneaking round the town, honey
And I’ll lay down the highway

I’ve got a blue motel room
With a blue bedspread
I’ve got the blues inside and outside my head
Will you still love me
When I get back to town
