Around eleven o’clock when the front door locks
And the boys start raising the bottle.
Where the girls do the thing with the Mardis Gras beads
Yeah, You know they’re gonna show 'em if they got ’em.

10. New Orleans is Sinking - The Tragically Hip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd-x9H6lfMs

Bourbon blues on the street loose and complete
Under skies all smoky blue-green
I can Forksake the dixie dead shake
So we dance the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom What's wrong? What's Going On
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said" Hey North you're south shut you big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about those years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had my hands in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the Lord above and said hey man thanks
Sometimes I fell so good I gotta scream
She says Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said I swear to God she said

My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

12. start with "Mardi Gras Mambo" - the Hawketts (w/ Art Neville)
follow with Al Johnson's "Carnival Time"

then to Wild Magnolias' "New Suit"

of course you gotta have "They All Ask For You" (Meters)

you must have Fess with "Go To The Mardi Gras"

and the night has to end with "If Ever I Cease To Love" sung by A J Loria.

these are my personal high point songs.

17. Sounds like the nucleus of a Carnival CD to me!
You didn't have an airshift at 'OZ (or 'TUL like I did), did you?

Factoid: Al Johnson is so closely identified with that one song that he is often called Al "Carnival Time" Johnson.

18. no, just a devoted listener of OZ and the TOOL
i see now that OZ is at the French Market... i'm from the days when it was upstairs from Tip's. and i loved Ernie K-Doe's program. "Mista Naugahyde!"

i will share with you my favorite TOOL moment... i think i was motoring on the I-10 service road between Causeway and Clearview, and listening to WTUL. i will never forget hearing this song, where the entire song was just a lengthy chant of the words, "Fist-Fcvker", over and over again, and laughing my @ss off so badly i had to pull over.

i only lived there for four years, but i made a lifetime out of it. i worked at Figaro, played in some bands, and became a lifelong acolyte of NOLA culture.

20. Four years is a bachelor's degree in New Orleans-ology!
I only have an associates' myself.

It's not a difficult subject at all, as long as you meet the prerequisite (having a soul). Hell, people have been known to complete the introductory course over a long weekend! :bounce:

14. Nah. MOBILE songs about Mardi Gras.
Mobile Mardi Gras celebration predates New Orleans'.

Mobile
They saw a swallow building his nest;
I guess they figured he knew best,
So they built a town around him
And they called it Mobile,
(WHERE'S THAT?) Alabama.

They took a swampland, heavy with stream,
They added people with a dream,
And that dream became a heaven
By the name of Mobile.

Pretty soon the town had grown
'Til they had a slide trombone,
And a man who played piano,
And a swallow who sang soprano.

No use your wondrin' where you should go.
It's on the Gulf of Mexico
Where the southern belles are ringin'
And the climate's ideal,
It's a honeysuckle heaven
By the name of Mobile. Yaahhhhhh!
:-)

This is a short story of a great album put out by Dr. John a few years ago about New Orleans. The title track starts at about 5 minutes in. It's really a great album. You should check it out sometime!
