The depression hits home: I just lost my j-o-b
They say the difference between a recession and a depression is, if your neighbor loses his job, it's a recession; if you lose yours, it's a depression.

It's a depression now. I've got a couple of months to find something.

Hugs welcomed.

My husband has been severely under-employed for
5 years now. I have been the bread winner, now
my job is on the line..

But, I live in Michigan, and we are WAY ahead
of the curve.

Hope you find something QUICK!

Good Luck.

The legal job market in MS sucks out loud, especially since we killed mass tort litigation.

15. My dear Peggy!
Thanks much! Something good will happen. A buddy of mine told me today, "I know it's hard to do, but just suck up all the mojo you can muster and walk proud." He's right.

I'm still in shock though. Who woulda thunk lawyers get laid off? In the old days, they wouldn't. But these aren't the old days.

56. Yeah, lawyers' jobs are eternal, right?
I am hearing stories almost daily about my pals from law school - we graduated in 1976 - who are being eased out the door. These are folks who have been with firms for years. The only friend I have whose job isn't in danger went to work for the NLRB right out of school and never left. Maybe he knew something.

There are no clients. Around here - the DC area, no less - solo practitioners are scrambling.

The old days are over, for sure.

I wish you luck, brother.

I'd love the DC area, but I hear it's really expensive to live there. I'm looking at this as an opportunity to downsize and simplify life. Tired of chasing the dollar, ya know? I'd just like to actually practice LAW again.

68. A sensayuma is very important when

you've been laid off. Years ago, I got laid off from a full-time college teaching position which still kind of cracks me up. Whoever heard of a college laying off some of its faculty? The best part was that the dean admitted that when they built a new dorm they hadn't figured on the cost of heating, cooling, and maintenance for the dorm and thus they were in dire financial straits. Can you believe he admitted what a doofus he'd been?

30. Many lawyers do things like real estate transactions, mergers & acquisitions, finance...
Business is very very soft in areas like that. Even divorce attorneys are reporting that some couples begrudgingly stay together because they can't afford separate households (let alone attorney fees).

Plus, tort reform puts lawyers out of work, and we've had a wave of it in MS. The state is no longer litigation-friendly.
