2. No. Good guess, but...
"Alison" never even made the Top 100.

Hint: Part of the point these questions is to show how different chart positions are from our memories of the time, or from what endures today.

3. I'll try:
1. Which of the following songs was the biggest Top 40 hit?

a. "Stairway To Heaven" - Led Zepplin
b. "I Melt With You" - Modern English
c. "What I Like About You" - The Romantics
d. "Never Say Goodbye" - Bon Jovi

Wild guess here -- Bon Jovi?

2. Who had more Top 40 hits, The Smiths or Morrissey?

Morrissey, tragically.

3. What was Elvis Costello's biggest hit single?

I'd wager "Veronica."

4. What song has currently been on Billboard's Hot 100 for over a year?

I have no freaking clue.

5. All of the Beatles have had solo number ones. Who was the first?

Ringo? "It Don't Come Easy?"

9. That's not true.
My parents married. It doesn't matter if it was 5 months after I was conceived.

Guess I didn't listen to the radio enough.

Hasn't Dark Side of the Moon (the album) been on the charts for 30 years or something?

8. veronica was elvis's most 'commercial' hit in the u.s.
though, speaking as a HUEUEUEUEUEUGE elvis fan, there's just something wrong about using 'elvis costello' and 'hit' in the same sentence.

16. DING DING!
We have two of the three.

"Veronica" was Elvis Costello's biggest hit (it got to #19).

George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" went to #1 in 1970, nearly a year before any other Beatle went to #1.

15. I'm sure "How Soon Is Now" was top-40 in the UK
Though I imagine Morrisey had more in the UK than the Simths.

I think you might be right that neither had any on this side of the pond.

22. Sorry. See DING DING above.
For the record, Elvis only had 3 Top 100 hits: "Veronica", "Everyday I Write the Book" (which got to #36), and "The Only Flame In Town" (which peaked somewhere in the 50s.)

29. Answers:
1. None of them.

"Stairway to Heaven" and "Never Say Goodbye" were never released as singles. "What I Like About You" and "I Melt With You" did not make the Top 40 (and "I Melt With You" was even released as a single TWICE).

2. Morrissey had the only U.S. Top 40 hit with "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get".

3. "Veronica"

4. "Unwell" by Matchbox 20 has spent over a year on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

5. George Harrison, "My Sweet Lord".

Thanks for playing!
