7. It was a tv show on Showtime a few years ago.
It is about people who have passed on and have become reapers.

It is really a good show.

8. Sounds interesting. I don't have Showtime or HBO or any of those.
So, I have to wait until A&E shows things, like they did with The Sopranos.

5. Introduction to Nonviolent Communication.
I like it, but it's a lot of rehashing of stuff I learned in Rogerian counseling courses. I'll probably take a more advanced course, too.

9. Sounds like a good course for young couples to take...
I assume it's all about how to have an argument without killing each other?

11. It would be.
The thing that's been most helpful to me is the concept that everything someone says is intended to meet a need. So, the thing you try to do is acknowledge that need--state it, maybe as a question to clarify that you're right as to what they need--and then try to work toward a way to meet the other person's need, while also stating your own needs. It's a lot of "I think I hear you saying..." which can be annoying, so you need to learn other ways to state it.

It goes "observation (I think I hear), empathy (you need or you want...), statement of need (...my respect, my car, more spaghetti...), resolution (How can I help you with that?)"

I'm supposed to carry a notebook around with me, noting conversations in which I take part, and how I did, or could have, use NVC. Or noting conversations I observe others taking part in, and noting how the conversation did not use NVC. It's amazing the things I notice now that I'm working at it. One thing they tell you to notice is what makes you or others defensive. People are defensive when they think the other party does not want their needs met. So, it's interesting now to see poor communication going on all around me, and to think about what might work better.

Then I come to the internets, and toss it all to the four winds, and just flame away!! I can't be on the clock all the time! :)

12. It's a pretty simple concept; but it's easy to ignore when we're in the throes
of self-absorbtion...which is where many arguments have their origin.

Thanks for posting this! I'm going to pass that info on to my older son. He and his girlfriend really need to refine their communication skills. :hi:
