1. What kind of annuity are you thinking of?

Usually, there is a designated beneficiary when one is set up.

I did not have such a wonderful experience with my AIG annuity. So, I'll never put my money in one again!

Good luck.

2. No. Not the annuity itself.
Typically, an annuity (at least one in the payout phase) is for one or two people, and has a certain time period or terminates when the annuitant(s) dies. Depending on the type of payout, any remaining money will be go to the beneficiary/beneficiaries. The beneficiary can start a new annuity with the proceeds, if that option is available.

If it's in the accumulation phase, it is treated much like any other investment/savings vehicle.

I worked in life insurane/investments for eight years as my first job out of college. I had a couple industry certifications and dealt with annuities on a daily basis, so I do have some expertise.

Either way, if it's a specific question, talk to an investment adviser or tax attorney.
