Argue all you want about how much of douchebag Bono is, his lame songs will never compare to the majestic sounds of The Pogues:

P.S. Billy Corgan sucks.

21. Pogues win in my book.
I have nothing against U2, but I just realized that I own none of their albums. I have all The Pogues records, so I guess I must agree with you.

Plus I got to see the Pogues play with Joe Strummer, which I hope will be the one memory I retain if I am ever stricken with memory loss. I achieved musical nirvana that night.

22. Jealous... Beyond... Words
Granted, I've seen The Pogues multiple times and The Mescalero's once. But Joe and Spider onstage together? Man, I think I would have passed out.

25. When Joe strode out playing on stage the entire first 10 rows just levitated.
I think we all defied the laws of gravity for a good 5 seconds. The Pogues played the opening part of London Calling...and then about 30 seconds in Joe walked out and joined them. It. Was. Awesome. Then they played the rest of the night together.

28. I wish I could youtube that part of my brain. :)
It was really a special night. I wish you all could have been there, too. It said "With Joe Strummer" on the ticket, but I didn't really believe it until it happened. It was in San Francisco in 92 or 93, I think.

24. U2's from the County Pop; The Pogues are from the County Hell.
I don't really think the two bands are all that comparable, but in terms of soul, The Pogues have it in spades. One thing I have never understood, as a fan of Irish music, is why The Pogues aren't more celebrated in terms of modern Irish music - is it perhaps they were too raucous for the traditional crowd? I find that MacGowan's lyrics really show a side of Irish life not documented in most other traditional Irish music. Sure, there's songs about being drunk, but selling yourself as a prostitute in London because you have no other way to support yourself?

Bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, while fun, are pale imitations of The Pogues.

30. I agree so much.
Their sound and soul is definite, in your face authentic. It's a pureness that you don't hear very often.
